Rome Subway Tickets

Can you ride line a from the spanish steps to termini and then line b from termini to the colosseum all on the same 1 euro fare? Or is changing lines require 2 separate tickets?

You can ride on one ticket. But you could walk faster from the Spanish steps to the Colosseum than the subway. I personally think the subway in Rome is nearly worthless. Learn how to use the bus system or the trams. Far more convenient and easier.

Sarah, if you're staying near the Spanish Steps. the most convenient option may be the Metro in Rome. But as Frank says, the metro is pretty limited. Even more limited are the buses at Piazza di Spagna, which is in a vehicle-restricted area. If you're departing from the Spanish Steps, then the metro may be your best public transportation option. It's three stops on the Metro A line to Roma Termini Station, then two stops on the Metro Line B to the Colosseo Stop - and yes, you can do this all on one ticket... as long as you follow the signage and stay behind the turnstiles at Roma Termini (It's easy; follow the signs and the crowd of tourists!). If you're staying closer to the Trevi Fountain Area, as Frank suggests, you can catch multiple buses to the Colosseo - like the #85 or #850, for example. If you're closer to Piazza del Popolo, you could take a winding, scenic route on the small, electric #117 bus towards Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano - or simply walk outside the Popolo piazza and get on the Metro A at the Flaminio station.

Sarah, One other point to mention. If you're planning to do a lot of touring around Rome using a variety of transportation methods, I'd suggest buying a B.I.G. (daily) ticket, as it provides good value (IMHO). The cost is €4, it's valid until midnight on the day of purchase and covers Metro, Buses, Trams, etc. Be sure to validate the first time you use it! There's usually an orange or yellow machine on the Buses or in the Metro stations. Happy travels!

Sarah, bus, tram and metro tickets are usually good for a fixed period of time from when you validate the ticket (I think 90 minutes). The walk might be more fun. I haven't used the BIG ticket in Rome, but be sure it's good for 24 hours from the time you validate it, rather than expiring at midnight of the same day (some other cities have day tickets that work this way).

Thank you all. I'm trying to decide whether the Roma Pass with the 3 days of travel was a good value. Was trying to find a bus route map and also a tram map, but haven't had any luck do you happen to know where I can find this information. Also, approximately how long is the subway ride from the train station to the spanish steps?

Sarah, The Metro ride from Roma Termini to Spagna is only a few minutes, as it's only about three stops. It will probably take longer to get downstairs to the Metro station at Termini. Cheers!
