We are looking for quiet accommodations for a family in the outskirts of Rome. We typically like to stay off the beaten path a little but would like to be near a train station to get into Rome. Any suggestions? We've considered near Antica Ostia, but we're not sure if that's doable.
The first time we stayed in Rome, we stayed at the Hotel Villa San Pio which is located in the Aventine section of Rome. It is a quiet leafy area and away from the bustle of Rome. And yet the metro was a 15 minute walk away. The train station was also a short walk away. We had dinner at the nearby Perilli Trattoria which I highly recommend. The Giardino degli Aranci (park) is also nearby with a gorgeous view of St. Peter’s. The Hotel San Anselmo is a sister hotel in the same area. I recommended the Villa San Pio to someone else fairly recently and they loved it. Of course, do your own due diligence and check out the reviews, etc. online to see if this place will suit you.
I stayed in an apt in Rome 10 minutes from the Pyramide metro station. Park across the street with sitters, kids, pickup soccer etc, trams, metro, major market, real neighborhood vibe. So no real need to be on the outskirts unless you might want real quiet and a agriturismo type of property. I always use booking.com with great success. Don't know how far out the metro system goes and spending money and time going back and forth. Maybe depends how long you plan to stay.
