Rome: Stay in Trastervere or Piazza Campo dei Fiori

We are renting an apartment. Have stayed in Trastevere before and loved it. Found apartment at Piazza Campo dei Fiori, also some near Piazza Narvona. Which area do you think we'd like best. 2 adult women and our 14 yr old daughters. Thanks!

Campo de Fiori & Piazza Navona are pretty close together so either area would be fine. We stayed in the Palazzo Olivia apartments close to both P. Navona & Campo de Fiori (closer to Piazza Navona) & we loved the apartment & the area. Those areas are my preference in terms of where to stay. I personally didn't care for Trastevere that much and was glad that we stayed close to P. Navona. We loved walking around P. Navona at night with a gelato in hand, watching the street performers & people watching. Here is the web site for Palazzo Olivia if you're interested & you can also see that the reviews on Trip Advisor are very good as well. http://www.palazzo-olivia.it/ Have a great trip. You can't go wrong with either area.

Debbie,
In June, my two teenage daughters and I stayed in Palazzo Olivia and really liked it. The accomodations were excellent, and the location can't be beat. By the end of the day, my daughters weren't up for a lot of walking to get to a fun place, and the Palazzo Olivia is literally just a couple of minutes away from Piazza Navona and Campo dei Fiori which are great places for a relaxing, but fun evening. We also loved exploring all the little side streets, shops, and restaurants in that area. They really enjoyed the morning market in Campo dei Fiori and loved all the gelaterias, pizza by the slice, and panini places that are around there, too. Have fun!

Since you've already stayed in TV (which we also loved), I would suggest CDF or Navona. As mentioned above, Palazzo Olivia is right between the two and it consistently gets high praise on this site. We considered it for our recent trip, but found a less expensive apartment near the CDF at a lower cost. In hindsight, I would have picked Olivia. (The apartment was very, very cramped.) It's also right next to a major bus line, and that comes in really handy when you're tired. (Be sure to get a transit pass.)

Trastevere is a wonderful place to stay. My wife and I stayed there a few years ago and really liked it. It was nice to get out of the city at the end of the day and relax. Great restaurants that are non-touristy as well as great gelato! There's a tram that will take you across the bridge and into Rome. My vote is for Trastevere.

I don't have kids but if I had a couple of teen daughters I think Piazza Navona/Campo would be the ideal spot so you could let them wander the squares on their own for a little bit. I liked Trastevere the couple of times I stayed there but if I had a teen, I don't think I'd allow any alone time there. There's a few slightly sketchy areas but there's a heck of a lot of great places to eat too. For sure there are some areas this is fine, but Navona I wouldn't hesitate. Why not try something new? Not to throw a wrench in the plan but my favorite place to rent an apartment is the Monti area.

Thanks for all of your help! What is the Monti area?

Monti is the eastern part of the historical center. I like it because I can walk everywhere. The Spanish Steps/Trevi and Forum/Colosseum are a short stroll and people really live there. If you use Termini, it's also handy for that too. It's just a great 'any hour' place to make home as there's always police/military presence as that's where the government buildings and residences are.

Monti is the general area between Termini and the Forum. It's an up-and-coming neighborhood for tourism. See this recent article in the NYT: Monti, Rome's Quiet Treasure
