Has anyone taken the tours offered to view the excavated area under St Peter's? We heard about this during a class at church and it sounded pretty interesting, thinking we might try to do this with our free afternoon in Rome.
Yes, we went on the tour, it is worth the time. We still talk about it to each other and friends. We went this past February. You do know you have to order tickets as soon as you have your dates set, do you? It is called the SCAVI tour and you can follow the link on SCAVI.va website.
Kimberly, when we were last there the excavated area was open to the public. We went down into it and were glad we did. We did not take a special tour to do so, although I'm sure if we had we would have gotten more out of it. Seeing St Peter's tomb was wonderful.
As Barbara has stated, request tickets as soon as possible. I requested them 11 months in advance for my trip next year and they were already full for my preferred day. I was able to get them another day, but I had to change my itinerary around a bit.
I received a response the following day on both my inquiries so it seems as though they are up-to-date on their requests and they are organized with their reservations. Once you receive confirmation of the date, you have ten days to pay. The payment system was very easy as well - they will send you a link and you just pay with a credit card. Print out your confirmation page as this will be your reservation to get in. Good luck! I'm REALLY looking forward to our tour.
I've never heard of the tour being open without being on a tour. Are you sure you're not talking about the Grottoes underneath the basilica?
The scavi tour is very tightly controlled with the number of guests that can visit per day. They do this to preserve the site. It's climate and humidity controlled.
You need to book this tour a few months in advance. You can do that through the official website.

Donna, I think it was open for some special event. I don't remember the details, but we were told afterward that we were fortunate to have seen it.

I suggest requesting tickets as soon as you have your airline tickets. I requested a date 11 months in advance, and my preferred date was already full. I was fortunate to get tickets for another date, but I had to move my itinerary around a bit.
They only have 2 people working in the office. The tour is not given every day so just requesting a date doesn't mean you'll get it. Sending in a request 11 months in advance means more a chance of the request getting lost. I usually request 3 months in advance and have never had an issue getting on a tour.

Thank you everyone. I've emailed with them directly and it turns out the area will be closed the dates we might possibly visit. Appreciate all the advice. Maybe another time!
