I'm taking a 12 day trip to Italy and would like to visit these three locations. Does anyone have a suggested route for this trip? Originally I planned to fly into Rome and out of Venice, but I'm completely flexible and would love to hear everyone's thoughts. If I could get at least 3 days in each city that would be perfect. Please help, thank you!
Also, would it make sense to throw in a day trip to Tuscany?
Stephanie Does your 12 day trip include your US departure date and your Italy departure date? Your last day in Europe is spent getting to the airport and waiting at the airport. Bobbie
Bobbie, Yes, my 12 days trip includes U.S. Departure date and getting back to the States. The actual dates are May 23 - June 2 so I guess if you look at it like that it's more of a 10 day travel trip, with 9 nights sleeping in Italy. Stephanie
Stephanie, Since you only have 12 day total, it mean you will have 10 nights in Italy. I would recommend to fly in Naples and fly out Venice. Or the other way to save a day. Day 1 fly out US Day 2 fly in Naples to Sorrento Day 3 Capri Island Day 4 Amlfi Coast Day 5 Train to Rome. ( stop by Pompeii ) Day 6 Rome Day 7 Rome Day 8 Rome Day 9 Train to Venice Day 10 Venice Day 11 Venice Day 12 Fly back to US.
Have a good trip!
Rick, That's looks like a great itinerary. Do you have recommendations for how to get from Capri to the Amalfi Coast? And having never been to the Amalfi Coast are there things I must do/see? Thanks for all your help!
Stephanie, I spend a few day in Amalfi Coast last May. I based in Sorrento. From there I make day trip to Capri Island ( One day ), and day trip to Positano and Amalfi ( One day ). I took the local train to Pompeii. ( One day ) From Sorrento to Capri Island I took the ferry ( 50 minutes) For Sorrento to Positano and Amalfi I took the bus. To save time, I think you should stop and visit Pompeii on you way back to Rome. The train stop for Pompeii is Pompeii Scavi. Half way between Sorrento and Naples. Thirty minutes from Sorrento. They have free luggage storage in Pompeii.
I recommend you to buy RS Italy guide book. It will give you all the info you need. It is a good investment. Also, people of this blog will answer you questions if they can.
Weather for the end of May and early June will be good. Should be around 60 to 80. Warn.
From Sorrento, you can take the Sita bus to Positano ( 50 minutes) and to Amalfi ( another 50 minutes ). You can buy a day pass in the candy store inside the train station of Sorrento for about 7.30E. The bus stop is located out side the train station. In May and June, the bus will be very crowded. I do not think it is good idea to bring luggage with you. One of the reason I like to base in Sorrento.
P.S. From Amalfi, you can visit Ravello by bus. (10 minutes) it is beautiful up there.
You also can take the ferry from Positano back to Sorrento. I am sure that there will be a lot of ferry running by that time of the year.
Make sure you ride on of the buses from Positano to Amalfi. It is an attraction on its own. Quite a ride! What time of year are you going? If it is not warm the Amalfi Coast and Capri may not be as interesting as there is very little indoor activity. If you are travelling off season I would drop the amount of time on the coast.
That's a great point, John. We are going end of May to early June. I'm not sure what the weather is typically like at that time of year? Do you happen to know the cost of the bus and possibly how long the trip is from Positano to Amalfi? I'm assuming we can bring our luggage along as well? Where would we purchase our tickets? Thanks so much everyone for your help! I really appreciate all the input :)
