Will fly into Rome Mid-May 2014. Will stay in Rome for 4 nights. Then, take the train to Naples and catch the Circum. train to Sorrento. Will use Sorrento as home base for three nights. Will tour Pompeii one of those days, Capri another day and take a bus down the Amalfi Coast. Will then return to Rome; stay in Rome on the last night (8th night) and fly home the next morning. Question #1: Is that doable? Do I have too much time allocated for each of these events? i.e. is one full day in Pompeii too much or can/should I do a tour of Pompeii one morning (until noon) and then do a bus trip down the Amalfi coast that same afternoon/evening? Question #2: I'm assuming there are tour buses that will go from Sorrento to say, Amalfi and then return. Am I correct? I don't want to rent a car and can only assume that there is some way of getting from Sorrento down the Amalfi Coast without costing too much $. Please advise.
Thanks
Pompeii can easily take most of a day. It's big. Amalfi Coast can take easily most of a day, if you want to enjoy it.
Doing Pompeii and Amalfi on the same day is a rush. Also they are located at opposite directions from Sorrento. Capri will be a full day excursion. You could do Pompeii on the way from Rome to Sorrento (or on the way back). That way you will have two full days (one for Capri and one for the Costa). You can leave your luggage at the Circumvesuviana station luggage storage in Pompeii. Then when you are done in the afternoon, you pick up your luggage and proceed to Sorrento. There is a regular bus service with the SITA company that has bus runs all day from Sorrento to Amalfi and back. It costs just a handful of euros.
When will you have time to enjoy Sorrento itself? It's our favorite town/place in Italy. It deserves a full day at least. Can you allot more time?
Sounds like a good pace, you'll have time for Sorrento after your daytrips.
Thanks to all for the input/feedback.
