We are traveling from Rome to Sorrento and I am thinking we should stop in Pompeii on the way to Sorrento instead of traveling to Sorrento and doubling back to Pompeii for a day trip? Can anyone recommend this?
We only have 3 days in Rome and Sorrento, so I'd like to use the time as wisely as possible.
You could easily see Pompeii on the way to Sorrento. Take a high-speed train early in the morning from Rome to Naples. In Naples, follow the signs to change to the Circumvesuviana local train. The Circumvesuviana stops right at the Pompeii entrance (the stop is called "Pompeii Scavi"). When you're done in Pompeii, just hop back on the Circumvesuviana and continue on to Sorrento.
Thanks for the reply. You've confirmed what the hotel stated. Have you taken the ferry to Pompeii?
There are no ferries to Pompeii. Pompeii was on the coast in ancient times but is now inland. You can take a ferry from Sorrento to Naples, but then you'd have to make your way (by bus & train) to Pompeii from the Naples ferry port. Much easier to use the Circumvesuviana train between Sorrento & Pompeii.
AND you can store your luggage at Pompeii!
