Rome: Something Different

We are making our 12th (or so) trip to Italy in May 2019 and this time heading down to clifftop hotel near Amalfi. We always take the United Nonstop from Washington Dulles to Rome and spend some time in the city on our way in and again on our way home. So, rather than spending a couple days in Centro Storico as we usually do, charging around from San Pietro to Trastevere to wherever, I was thinking it would be nice to spend the time relaxing in a somewhat remote location, preferably with a view of the city and just chill out until it's time to head for FCO, with one or two excursions into the city to do something specific, then scoot back out. Given all that, does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Grazie!

Is the area just north of Piramide Metro station too close to your usual places? Testaccio, San Saba, Aventino?

We've never stayed in this apartment, but for instance this Aventino airbnb studio has great views and is a couple blocks from one of the best viewpoints in Rome:

There are other tall apartment buildings with top floor apartments with views in these areas. Also, you can take a train from Ostiense station directly to FCO and not have to mess with Termini at all --- that's what we did this March, just walked there from our apartment.

You could stay up the hill at Parco dei Principe Hotel. Requeat a room overlooking the pool and park. They have a spa. It is above where the Villa Borghese is located in a upscale neighborhood.

This is probably bigger, posher, pricer and closer in than you had in mind but it's hard to beat the view if that's what you're after:

No, we haven't stayed there but wow....

You might also consider something out near the Appia Antica? No view of the city but there's some nice countryside out there and, of course, a ton of very old and interesting things to see out that way. Just as an example, this little 3 apartment resort in Capannelle looks pleasant and is seeing exceptional reviews. The town is also on a train line: just 8 minutes into Termini for €1,00 and there's bus service too. Anyway, there are probably some other options in that area if interested.

Look into Frascati. Nice centre, regular transport in to Rome, view above Rome at night, Castel Gandolfo close by. Hotels will not be as expensive.

If you want to consider the Waldorf Astoria as previously mentioned, we were able to stay there using Hilton Rewards points. That was several years ago, so things may have changed. My husband likes to say that we "had a better view than the Pope!"
