Rome-Siena-Milan-Lake Como

Dear all,
We would like to ask your help with itinerary and logistics.
we plan to arrive Rome night of the August 20th, and fly back to the States from Milan on August 29.
What would be the best itinerary for this trip ?
We thought 2-3 days in Rome
1 day Siena
2-3 days Lake Como
1-2 days Milan

Is it doable ? Any suggestions ? Ideas ? Any help highly appreciated !
Do we need a car or trains and buses will be a better choice ?

Thank you

No car, trains will get you everywhere you want to go. Think in terms of nights not days. 2 nights = 1 full day, 1 night = 1/2 day.

Too many places for 8 days.

Look at the RS Best of Venice, Florence, Rome that covers 10 days and one less destination.
The tours have a dedicated bus for door to door delivery, something you will not have.

Car more a hindrance than help in Milan and Rome and unnecessary for Lake Como

For suggestions of how to modify your trip, you should provide some info on what you would like to see--- what are your interests, and when does your flight leave Milan.

Thank you for your responses.
A few clarification points:
We are a middle age couple in decent shape traveling with a 16 yo son. We wanted to see historical and cultural attractions (Rome, Siena, Milan), nature (Lake Cuomo), shopping (Milan), and experience good food and wine everywhere.
We will be leaving Milan on the afternoon of the 29 (3pm).

We thought...
Aug 21-23 - Rome
Leave Rome on 24th AM to Siena
Leave Siena on 25th AM to Lake Como
25,26,27 - Lake Como
Leave Lake Como to Milan on 27th PM
27,28 Milam
Fly back on 29th.

It appears that the journey from Siena to Lake Como is logistically complicated. Am I correct ? How long will it take ? and how should we approach it ?

You have too many places in too few days. Think about less being more since you only have 8 full days on the ground. You are going to spent more time transiting to places than being in those places. Each move will take at least one half day of travel time eliminating time spent in your locations. I would eliminate Siena and save it for your next trip. By eliminating Siena your itinerary will be more direct with less connections.

Also, you can use the train for all of your traveling needs.

Buon viaggio,
