Rome-Ship to Shore?

We are going on a cruise departing from Rome then to Athens, to Santorini, to Mykonos, to Ephesus and back. We wish to extend our trip with a few days more in Rome. Is there a sane financial option for traveling from the Cruise ship port (Civitavecchia)to downtown Rome, without surrendering a first born child or more. All we have seen is a van at $450 per fool (oops! I meant per person). Thanks for any help or insight you can provide...Bob

Bob, My husband and I walked from the dock to the train station in Civitavecchia and took the train to Termini.(we weren't the only ones, there was a little herd walking to the train station) I don't remember the exact price of the ticket, but not anything like 450. Not as easy as walking off the ship and having a van pick you up, but we would rather spend that money having a nice meal and a bottle of wine. Have a great trip.

It is easy to do. It is commuter run to Rome -- anywhere from 45 mins to 1 hr 15 depend on train. Two to three trains an hour. A second class ticket will run about $10. Could be a couple bucks more or less -- again -- depending on the train. The port shuttle bus will take you from the ship to the port entrance. It is about a mile walk straight along the beach. You cannot miss the station. There is a local bus for a Euro or so to the station but it is generally packed. Second, there will be lots of taxis BUT no one will take the short trip to the station. They are looking for the big bucks to Rome or the airport. The biggest problem will be buying the train ticket. The line will be long especially if more than one ship is in port. Packing light even for a cruise pays dividends.

Good luck, we have done it four times.

PS -- Need to add. Depending on the train you may not be able to get reserve seats and have to stand or sit on your luggage. Had to do that for one of our trips because there were three other ships in port that day.

We took a cruise similar to yours last year, but did the opposite took the train from Rome to the port. It is not a bad walk from the train station to the port where you catch a bus to the ship. Don't expect cabs there are very few in Civitavecchia. You can take the train to termini station or the station by the Vatican.

Ciao Bob,

The folks at Romashuttle.com will give you a ride from about €120 for two folks. Romecabs.com also will do it for about the same price. The cheapest way to is to take the train. A Regional train costs €4.50 each and stops in San Pietro, Trastevere, Ostiense, and Termini. The IC Plus will cost you about €10 each for 2nd class, and stops only in Ostiense on the way to Termini. These are by far the cheapest options!

If you need more help, send me a question at [email protected] . Good luck on your trip!

Ciao,
Ron in Rome!
