My husband and I will be heading to Rome next year before joining a Rick Steves tour of Sicily. We've been to Rome several times - visited the Vatican, Coliseum, Forum and most 'main' museums. Any suggestions for places to go next? We would be interested in day-trips out of Rome as well as sites people may not immediately think of when they plan a trip to Rome. Thank you!
If you've not been, consider Ostia Antica. It's a "local" day trip using public transportation and should only take about 3/4 of a day. Google it and see if it appeals to you.

A day trip to Tivoli to see Hadrian's Villa and the beautiful gardens and fountains at Villa de Este is a wonderful way to spend a day outside of Rome.
How about the catacombs?
Have you been to Trajan's Forum and the Capitaline Museum?
Consider Orvieto and more in Umbria.
Thank you to everyone for these great ideas. I'm making a list :)

- Church of St. Louis of the French (3 Caravaggios) (close to the Pantheon)
- Santa Maria del Popolo (2 Caravaggios)

- Santa Maria in Aracoeli

Just spent two weeks in October in Tivoli. It is a 45 minute train ride from Termini Station/Rome. Also trained into Rome and took day trips to Frascati ,Ariccia, and Lido di Ostia. All within one hour to a hour and a half from Rome.
Take a look at youtubers ROMEWISE. and ROZIER ROMA. Lots of good info on different places, things to do
I enjoy Rome so much more when I'm not seeing the main sites!
Last time we went to Doria Pamphji Gallery and Capitoline museum. I assume you have seen the Borghese gallery?
I also like the southwest corner, Aventine hill has.a pretty garden and views, St Sabine Church is also up there. The protestant cemetery is over that way too. Testaccio has wonderful restaurants, and there is the Testaccio market
Hi, we went on several Rome guided tours with Roberto. Small group, 5 individuals and great cost for the tour. Signed up for first tour on a familiar site and now go directly to him. Email him with days and where we are staying and request his availability and best tour options. His recommendation on where to eat at the end of each tour has been excellent as well.

@Marco: this list reminds me of a school trip with a Latin teacher and one for catholic religion. It was a really good trip, but we could have managed a general indulgence from all the churches we visited:-)
Another idea besides the aforementioned: The trastevere district should still have a bit of a different vibe when compared to the other side of the river - it used to be the party strip of Ancient Rome, and even after two millennia it retains a bit of that.
Lots of good suggestions for visiting around Rome. How about spending a night or 2 in Orvieto, a hilltop town a short train ride north of Rome. There is an underground tour and lovely cathedral. On our visit the bonus was a parade, flag twirling and a horse race. Just a lucky timing . Visit Villa de’Este for the wonderful gardens with water features. The house tour interesting. We took the public bus.
