I've read in numerous polaces about Il Gabriello and I am also going to try Quinzi & Gabrieli ....what other NON TOURIST resturants are worth trying. I've heard too many stories of toursit traps.I also check my "messages"
For lunch I enjoyed Ristorante Alla Rampa, Piazza Mignanelli, 18. It is just a few steps from the Spanish Steps and they have a lunch buffet, or you can order from the menu. Seating inside and out.
It is charming !!!! Prices were not bad and the food is great.

You may enjoy Dar Pallaro near Campo Fiori. You will need a detailed map to find it--it is actually off tiny Campo Pallaro. It is family run with a set menu for 22E pp for five small courses with house wine and water. It is Roman style food--simple dishes but very good. It is definitely not touristy.
just get out of the historic district and you'll find many small family run restaurants.
If you want good pizza eat at a restaurant with a sign in the window or on the door that says, fornaio [or forno] rustica, something like that, which means they're made the old fashioned way in brick ovens. If you don't see that they make their pizzas in regular ovens. Boy is there a difference. Yum.
The RS Guide recommended a little place near the Spanish Steps called Fiaschettra (check the guide). It was the best, and most reasonably priced, meal we had in Rome. Very small -- we shared a table with a couple we didn't know and all enjoyed each other's company, too.
I'll second Susan's recommendation for Trattoria der Pallaro. Though it's in the RS book, I wouldn't classify it as touristy. Just sit back and let dinner come to you.
