We'll be in Rome over Christmas and I've been told that most restaurants are closed on Christmas and the 26th. Does anyone have any recommendations for a nice place that will be open on the 25th and/or 26th? Or should we look at cooking for ourselves? I'd prefer something that is not formal or touristy-- mostly just interested in great food and wine!
I seem to remember a few places being open in Rome this past Christmas. If you just keep an eye out there are often signs because the places that are open will advertise it. I don't recall the name of the restaurant but we had dinner near the piazza Cavour on Christmas.
If you look up the website for specific restaurants, they will usually tell you if they are open those nights. Your best bet might be to just ask your hotel for a recommendation when you arrive.
Generally the restaurant "Il Pagliaccio" is open on Christmas. It's a bit formal though and if I am not mistaken it has been given a michelin star.

Good post by When In Rome. In fact, Il Pagliaccio now has two Michelin stars, which puts it on a very short list of Rome restaurants to receive that level of recognition.
Dinner there will be $100 to $150 (or more) per person,
but no worries for dinner on Christmas because they're only open for lunch on Christmas.
Here's the restaurant's schedule for late Dec / early January
Maccheroni near the Pantheon is open every day of the year. The food is good & not expensive. Be sure to make a reservation for Christmas day. www.ristorantemaccheroni.com
