Dropping off a rental car in Rome and then staying 4 nights near Piazza Novona. What is the easiest location to drop off a rental car to 1) minimize crazy Roman driving and 2) still be at a close spot to get to our apartment easily? Would the Termini Station be do-able?
Rome driving isn't really that bad. Termini is fairly straight-forward to get to from the eastern freeways.
You can drop the car off in Orvieto. I believe AutoEurope has a location there, if you are renting from them. By the way, Orvieto is a quaint hilltown worth exploring. Then take a 1 hr. train ride to Rome Termini station and take the subway or bus to Piazza Novona. Personally, I don't like driving in big cities where I'm trying to avoid one way streets and mopeds buzzing in/out and around me because I'm not going fast enough. Have fun on your trip.
Friends did the Orvietto rental car drop off a few summers ago. They spent a night there and toured and then took the train to Rome the next morning for the final leg of their trip. They recommended to us if we get back in that are again.
Dropping off somewhere outside the city is preferable. Orvieto seems like a good enough place. The Termini is right in the middle of the city and traffic is a bitch! I wouldn't do that.
We picked up our rental car in the huge underground multi agency rental garage under the Villa Bourgesee.
It had easy acess to the freeways.
You walked down the steps/escalators and came out next to the Spanish Steps, and could grab a bus/Metro from there.
We picked up a car at Termini, and it took us almost two hours to get to the highway! Driving in Rome is difficult because of the congestion of all the other cars and Vespas on the roads. Not too mention that the street were not clearly marked. We returned our car to Fumicino Airport and took the train to Termini.
