We are travelling to Rome from Civitavechia, staying 4 nights, then taking the train to Venice. We are thinking to stay in the Termini area since we are arriving and leaving by train. Looking for some recommendations for places to stay. Hotel Aberdeen has no availability (Sept 29-Oct 3). Has anyone ever used Monastery Stay? We aren’t looking for luxury - but clean and quiet are good choices for us. We are open to bed and breakfast options too. Edit added - We are wondering why this weekend is mostly booked - availabilities are plenty before and after this weekend but the weekend itself is showing not available in a lot of places we pick!
Monastery Stays is certainly worth trying - I just looked at their Rome map, and they do have several places close to Termini. One thing to be aware of is that some of them have curfews.
When looking for hotels, I often will go to Google Maps and pull up a map of the area I'm looking to stay in. Then I'll hit "Hotels" at the top of the page, and icons pop up everywhere with prices noted. Click on the icons and you can go one by one looking at their website. You can also read about customer recommendations too. You can also find the same properties on Booking.com.
Termini is a very active area to stay in. I prefer around the Pantheon as properties are a little higher class and the restaurants in the area are good. We usually stay in the Vatican Museum neighborhood at the San Pietro/Ottaviano underground station as it's so easy to get to--and the Vatican's within eyesight.
We always stay between the Pantheon and the Piazza Navona, convenient to historic sites, nice areas. We avoid areas near train stations.
In Rome there is no need to stay near the station. It is easy to reach in a 15 minute cab ride from the center and it is much more pleasant to stay in the Centro Storico near the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Campo de' Fiori, or even across the Tiber in Prati near the Vatican. (You can also take a bus but we hate doing that with luggage and in Rome, cabs are plentiful and inexpensive.)
Try Booking.com for easy sorting by location and your criteria (price, amenities) but you might do well to contact the hotel or use the hotel's website for the best rate and service/extras. Rick Steves lists several in his Rome guidebook.
I like to stay in Trastevere. There are trams and busses within a couple of minutes walk to go everywhere in Rome. Even the Vatican was walkable, due to the fact that we missed the bus!
