Rome: Quiet, clean, budget lodging possible?

Hello,

I will be staying in Rome for about 2 weeks in late September-early October. If anyone knows of a clean B&B/hotel/apartment north (?) of the Tiber, preferably near a Metro line, where one does not experience street noise at night, that can be had for no more (preferably less than) 100 euros a night, please tell me! (Or just have a good laugh at my expense for suggesting such a place exists).

Just to make my request even funnier, I have a bad shoulder and will have one bag I cannot carry up any stairs, so I would need assistance transporting the bag when I arrive and when I leave Rome, if there are stairs.

On the other hand, it's just me - I only need a bed, private bathroom, and hopefully a chair and a table. I'm very quiet, clean, and I'll be out a lot, I just want to be able to relax a little when I'm home. I don't ask for absolute silence :)

Thank you for any tips you can offer,
Tom

The place I stay at whenever I am in Rome is Hotel Julia, which I found on booking.com. I was there last October and the cost was 70 euros per night for a single room. Its very close to Piazza Barbarini, which has a metro stop. The bathroom is down the hall, but there is only one room on each floor that has none en suite, so its as good as your own private bathroom. If I recall correctly, there is only one step up to get to the elevator. And the breakfast included is quite good. The area is quiet for Rome, but is a brief walk to either Trevi fountain or the Spanish steps, nor too far to walk to Borghese gallery or the Colloseum.

Tom,

For clean and budget lodgings in Rome, you might have a look at THE BEEHIVE which is not too far from Roma Termini, so convenient for transportation. You'll have to ask them what the street noise is like.

The convent of the Suore di Santa Elisabetta is about four blocks from Termini (and the Metro), right by the basilica of S M Magiore. It's on a quiet side street, and I've never heard any traffic noise. There's very little traffic on the street. They also have an elevator, so you won't have to carry your bags upstairs. I've stayed there several times, Most recently about a year and a half ago. At that time, a single room including breakfast was about €50. The rooms are very simple, but comfortable and spotlessly clean. There is no phone or TV in the rooms, if that matters to you. I don't have the contact information right now, but you should be able to find it on the Internet. A couple of caveats – usually no one speaks English, and there is a curfew (you'll need to check the time with the sisters). I booked by email.

There are a number of other options for convents and monasteries. The website monasterystays.com lists them.

Wherever you choose, do ask about a quieter room, so they know your preference. That might just give you a view of a ventilation shaft.

Hotel Italia is near Termini station. I think a single room is usually 70 euro a night. There are stairs to get to the lobby but also an elevator (I think you put in change to operate it though so having some coins handy is a good idea). A standard european breakfast is included.

Its clean, quiet and the staff are very helpful/friendly. I'm sure they could arrange to help you with your bag.

I just returned from Italy on Tuesday. Spent 5 nights in Rome at The Beehive. They have apartments that you share with others in addition to hotel rooms. Spent one night in their "The Sweets" - bedroom in an apartment - private bath. Quiet, elevator, clean, enjoyed talking to others in the apartment. I think it had about 5 bedrooms. The remainder of the nights, we stayed at "The Clover" an apartment about 1 1/2 blocks from the train station. Also nice. Did not have private bathroom, but not a problem. Liked the apartment - spacious bedroom - all was very clean. Located on 5th floor, but there was an elevator. The Beehive is very easy to find. Just exit the station at the north entrance, walk directly across the street to Via Margharea and two blocks down the street and you are there.
