Rome - Quick Trip

I have to meet my son and his wife in Vienna on the 27th of June and thought it a good excuse to go someplace else. I looked at Slovakia and Bulgaria and Corfu but ended up booking to Rome. I had avoided it because its summer and Jubilee, but when I checked the flights, they worked well and were reasonable ... Ryan. Then I checked hotels on Booking. com and after applying all the filters for cost and quality and location, there were nearly 400 hotels to choose from. Prices no wose than Vienna. I didn't expect that. Then the last hotel I stayed at 10 years ago was available, so it was a done deal. The S.O. is pleased, as was her first choice.

I arrive at about 10 am on the 29th of June and depart about 8 pm on 2 July ... I get home at midnight.

I am buying the Vatican tour for the S.O. But the rest is independent. I've been a few times but not recently, and my memory is failing. I need some walking tour maps and any suggestions.

Try the gelato. I've heard good things about the stuff-- especially in Italy!

Have a great trip!

Happy travels.

There are some great audio tours for Rome on Rick Steves’ Audio Europe app - free in Apple Store or Google Play. Both of his Rome guidebooks have foldout maps.

Our guide said the place right off Piazza Navona had the best* flatbread pizza in Rome.

(*Don't know about that but it was very good)

I think a golf cart tour to see some city highlights would be great for Day 1 or 2. You have the Vatican covered, so I’d decide if there’s anything else that’s a priority for either of you that you should get advanced tickets for - coliseum, pantheon, food tour or class? If not, the golf cart tour/guide might give you some ideas of areas you want to explore or less “touristy” churches, etc you might want to see.

Walking in late June it can be hot so I would suggest you remember to take a good insulated hydration device preferably containing no plastics. I am fond of Eddie Bauer Paragon Stainless Steel Water Bottle (- 22 Oz -) in Winter Blue. The two tone ones are a bit flashy for my tastes!!!

Happy travels!

Well played David.

Today I saw two ladies on the tram. One had her crossbody bag unzipped, she was sort of leaning over and it was hanging open to the world . ... and everyone on the tram. We don't have much problems with pick pockets and the like, but it would be a shame if something fell out. Do I say something? Sure, easy, because I knew they were Americans because of the rather large, metal hydration devices they were carrying. A dead giveaway.

If you haven't been to San Clemente Church, you should prioritize seeing it.

cala, they named it after a place in California. Amazing.

Catmom, I had never heard of Golf Cart Tours. I hope they dont spread here. BUT, for someone else’s town, great idea. Or maybe a tuktuk (we do have a few of those).

The hotel is between the Pantheon and Plaza Navona so I think:

  • Sunday 29th arrival day: We depart Vienna at 08:10 so we will have been up since 3 or 4 in the morning. The plane lands at 09:50 so by the time we get to the hotel and drop off the bags, I am thinking it will be close to noon. So, head off in the direction of Trevi and the Spanish Steps with lunch along the way. Easy evening. Something close to the hotel. Outside pretty. Suggestions?
  • Monday 30th: Pantheon, Plaza Navona, Sant 'Angelo and to the Vatican by 3:45 for a scheduled tour. It’s a 3 hour tour (sounds like a Gilligan tour) ... so a casual place for dinner on the way back to the hotel. Suggestions, Then a hangout for a few hours before bed Suggestions.
  • Tuesday 1st: Roman Forum and Coliseum direction. Mostly a wandering around lost. Guess I need tickets for the Coliseum. Suggestions
  • Wednesday: Our flight home is at 20:20 (Ciampino) so maybe pick up luggage at the hotel and head to the airport at 16:30 to 17:00 (I am conservative). That gives us most of the day for something ....... Suggestions for a farewell day?

This is why I love Bulgaria, Ukraine, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro. I know good trip planners in both. I just tell them to take care of me and do as I am told.

Chiesa di Sant'Ignazio di Loyola should be close to where you’re staying.

Restaurants near Pantheon-
Salumeria
La Pace del Palato

I’d get Colosseum tickets from the official site, especially if you’re not interested in a guided tour.

Just keep in mind that at both locations you may encounter mob scenes that will rival Christmas market crowds at peak times in Budapest.

For Colosseum tickets - you will have the advantage of being in a time zone close to Rome time, so 30 days in advance, to the hour, should be easier:

If you end up in Trastevere for dinner, maybe look for a place a bit less touristy than Tonnarello.

The Basilica market can be a bit cozy, the big one at Vorosmarty is still fine. But i get the point. Its summer, its jubilee, etc. I was still stunned that there were so many rooms and the prices were not great, but not insane either. I wonder why? And I am getting 4 days of sightseeing with 3 nights accommodations thanks to flight schedules. So thats a bargain.

This is a guilt trip as I am off by myself fishing in Montenetro in May. The S.O. cant come as she would need a visa outside of Schengen. No, I probalby didnt plan it that way. And no, this wouldnt be my first choice for the guilt trip, but we dont always get to choose .... Such is life. I practiced in the mirror explainign to my S.O. that we were going to skip Rome and see Lviv instad and I just couldnt find the right words to convince her that going into a cournty at war was was going to be fun (but Lviv would be). So I save Lviv for myself maybe later in the summer and we do this now. Of course then I have another guilt trip to plan.

Everyone should see London, Paris, Rome, its trip 4 for me to Rome over 30 years, and I think I have done Paris and London 3 times each. But 20 years ago I discovered that I enjoy and have more fun where the tourists dont out number the population. Once it gets written about in Conde Nasty it goes to pot. Sort of what happened to Croatia for me. It was so wonderful once. But I discovered Montenegro so its okay.
