Rome private tours

I am looking for a tour of Rome to show areas off of the sightseeing path. We have seen the sights all tourists should see and now we will have an opportunity to see some of the Rome the residents see. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

I have a couple of resources to recommend for self-touring. Two books, "Rome the Second Time: 15 Itineraries that don't lead to the Colosseum," and "24 Great Walks in Rome." I have used both to see parts of the city that tourists seldom wander into. Rome the Second Time is also a website/blog. As to private tours, you might try Katie Parla or Walks of Italy. Both offer custom options. I have taken a Vatican tour with "Walks" and I know Katie's work well-enough to recommend her.

Thanks, Laurel, for mentioning our (noncommercial) Rome the Second Time website. We don't do tours, but on the right side of the website/blog, those interested in getting off the beaten path will find our Rome the Second Time Top 40 attractions. Our 400+ posts go well beyond that list--check it out!

Margaret, if small group walking tours would interest you (6 or fewer people), I recommend you look at Context Rome's website. They have a huge range of walking tours with some really amazing guides. The tours are focused on specific topics, and many include less-visited sites. It's also a chance to walk neighborhoods with well educated locals. I've taken a number of their tours (in multiple cities) and always enjoyed them. In Rome, I've done their tours of underground sites in Rome, medieval churches, imperial Rome, and Vatican Museums/St Peter's; all were excellent (even when I had previously been to sites multiple times on my own), and all provided new insights/apreciation.

Margaret, If you're interested in more of a "custom" tour, you might contact Francesca Caruso. She's an outstanding Guide with an amazing knowledge of the history, and I'm sure she would be able to arrange the type of tour you're interested in. I'd have to check my records for her contact info, but there are details in the Guidebook. Happy travels!

Thank you. This is exactly what I wanted......a private tour guide well versed in the area.
