Not so much a question as comments, but I just returned from 10 days in Rome, five of which were business. Since I used many peoples comments in prepping for the trip, I thought I would post some results and thoughts over several postings, entertaining questions along the way. Hotel: My conference was outside of Rome in a business park, which seemed a silly place to stay. The Trastevere area was the closest so in doing an internet search stumbled on the Hotel Trastevere (Complicated huh?) Have to admit it was a wonderful place to stay; clean, staff helpful, 90 Euro a night (normal rate is higher), close to the tram line and rail service I needed for commuting. Had the potential to be noisy since the windows were typical single pane, but we never really noticed any noise after 10:00 PM, until the market in the square started up each morning. The Trastevere area itself was great, a little gritty, but great restaurants, nice ambience, lots of people, but not as "touristy" as across the river. Over the week, we found a few good restaurants, the best pizza in Rome (tried many), and really enjoyed off-season travel.
Paul,
Glad you had a good trip & I think your post trip comments are great so share some more. I will be in Rome in May & can always use information from travellers.
Glad you had a good trip. I would like to know what the weather was like while you were there. We are going to Rome/Florence/Venice end of December this year and little concerned about the cold weather-but rates are good so that works for us. Thanks!
Last week, temps ranged from high forties to high fifties (Deg F). Not alot of wind, Sunny about half of the days, cloudy the rest with a couple days of occasional light rain. It really was better than expected, and wearing a jacket I could slip maps, translation guide, and my small camera in the inside pockets, so it was handy from that standpoint. Due to required walking, more rain or colder temps (low forties and less) might be an issue; but overall, for a normally shoulder season traveller, I really enjoyed the off-season.
Hi Paul,
Thanks for taking time to post comments from your trip. I think that it's fun and really interesting to hear how the suggestions made on this site turned out for people traveling. Rome is such a great city and you're right, there are great restaurants in Trastevere.

Nice to read your trip comments. Did you do any sightseeing in Rome? I would love to read some more and maybe give the names of restaurants?
Hi Paul!
Will be in Rome for 1 evening before a 14-day cruise of Italy. Have heard great things about the Trastevere area as far as restaurants. So think that's where we will head for our one great meal in Rome! Doing an evening walking tour starting at the Spanish Steps which finishes off around 8pm in that area. Love to hear your recommendations for where to eat and drink wine!
Thanks for sharing!
Ciao,
Susan
