I have read the Rick Steves method of getting to Naples on the way to Rome, but I can't tell what the regional trains or the fast trains cost. I've been at the www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html site and can't tell what the trains are, but they seem pretty expensive and it looks like it could cost over 150E for a round trip - which seems like a heck of a lot of money for a 150 mile train ride and back. I've driven a lot in Italy, an am wondering why I just don't dirve for $100 for a car and gas. If anyone can help me with the cost of the regional and express train I would appreciate it. Thank you.
Dan, the standard 2nd class round trip fare from Rome to Naples is 72.20Euro. I can see this fare on the Trenitalia website. I don't know the fare for the Circumvesuviana from Naples to Pompei but it's only a 30 minute ride on a local train.
CLICK HERE to see a typical Trenitalia train schedule. When you look at the train category column, the R stands for the regional local train. The remainder (A, ES and ICPlus) are faster trains that will require seat reservations. You can ride the R train for slightly less cost but it will take an hour more.
Dan,
Look at the journey times to determine the train. Basically you pay more for a speedier journey. The fastest train Rome to Naples is AV 46.60 euro first and 36.10 second class. A regional will cost 10.50 euro. Trains by speed and comfort are AV, ES, ICPlus, IC, R. An ICPlus is a very nice train and is 25.50 euro first and 19.50 euro second class.
Since I assume you want to go to the ruins (Pompeii scavi) you will need to spend 3 or 4 euro for the circumvesuviana from Naples to Pompeii Scavi.
Thanks everyone for the replies. When you are talking about costs, are you talking one way or two way?
They are one way fares. You can possibly get AMICA fares which are 20% less than the standard fares listed above (not available for regional trains) . AMICA fares can be purchased upto midnight the night before departure. AMICA fares are limited to a certain number of seats.
Dan, my fares above are round-trip. Henry's fares are one-way.
