Look at Hotel Fori Imperiali Cavalieri, family run, near Colosseo and Via Cavour. Check on booking.com and the hotel's site to compare prices. I paid about $75/single with breakfast in July, but I booked far in advance (as you are).

I stayed in 95 Room in Rome, booked through booking.com just a few weeks ago and found it to be an excellent value. Very good breakfast delivered to the room, including eggs cooked to order. Very nice staff, single room was a little quirky but I saw some of their doubles and they were nicer. Around $90 for a single. It's close to the Cavour metro station, and bus routes along Via Nazionale. Colosseum and Trevi fountain is walkable from the hotel. It's in the Monti neighborhood which feels like a real neighborhood, which is nice.

I was thinking Booking.com has over 1000 listings for accommodations. If you're price oriented, filter your search by price and look for customer opinions substantially higher than others in the same price range.
The neighborhood also matters.
We stayed 4 blocks from the Vatican--2 blocks from an underground station--in April. Took the underground from Termini--inexpensive.

I stayed 2 nights at Casa Santa Lucia Filippini through http://www.monasterystays.com/

I think you have to be in by midnight but it was conveniently located and included a light breakfast.

Was suppose to be in a single for 90 Euro but they gave me a quad room.

If you find a likely place on a website like booking.com, it's worth trying to locate the lodging's own website for a price comparison. In 2015 I used venere.com to book a (fully disclosed) very tiny single room in a small hotel in Trastevere. I believe the rate was about $90 per night. I booked it perhaps 45 or 60 days in advance, and at the time I didn't find anything cheaper in that area. (I'd be more comfortable now with a wider variety of locations.)

After arriving in Rome I decided I wanted to stay an extra night or two and was able to do so. For the extra time I paid $65 per night. I have a very strong suspicion that I would have saved considerable money by booking the entire stay directly with the hotel.

This is not intended as a criticism of venere.com (now part of hotels.com, I think), which I used frequently and was satisfied with during my two-month trip to Italy. It's just what happened to me on one occasion.

eric,

How "economic" are you thinking of? Are you considering only hotels, or would a Hostel suffice? That's about the most economical choice in a large city like Rome, but of course that means "communal living". There are several Hostels close to Termini station.

Eric, we recommend the Hotel Aberdeen. It's not too far from the Termini train station, but in a safe and quiet neighborhood. We were there last year, and paid €68 per night, plus €4 city tax. A good breakfast is included. This was in February of 2015.

Not to hijack this post, but has anyone stayed at the Hotel Navona? We have seen some good reviews on TripAdvisor.

Check the website monastarystary.com. It will list all of the monasteries throughout Italy listed by location. We had a wonderful stay in October of this year in a monastery in the Trastevere neighborhood that was clean, air conditioned, welcoming, daily cleaning service and a wonderful full hot breakfast for less than 130 euros per night. A wonderful neighborhood too!

I am a budget hotel person and I always stay near the Termini (Train Station) - you can get on the Metro from there or catch a bus or train to just about anywhere. I walked to the Colosseum/Forum area and several other areas from my hotel. I have stayed in the Hotel Sonya and the Hotel Contilia and been fine with both places. You can get an idea on availability on tripadvisor.com and I found I always get a better price if I book directly with the hotels via email or phone call.
