Rome Palatine Hill ok on free days?

im going to be in Rome this summer during one of the first Sunday's of the month. I think i could live without going into the colosseum, but not the Forum and Palatine Hill. I know its super crowded on free days, but the Palatine Hill seems pretty wide open and possibly could be OK on a free day, any opinions on this which could help me with trip planning?

We were at the Forum/Palatine Hill on Friday, 11/3 - two days after the All Saints' Day holiday - there was a very long line for tour groups, which made it difficult for individual ticket holders to get into the proper line. Getting into the Colosseum the day before was a breeze by comparison.

The paths inside were crowded in places. In addition, there were several cloudbursts which created water obstacles in the paths. So not the best visit. Fewer people up on the Palatine Hill.

The Palentine Hill is very large with many wide walkways and field-like areas. We were there last October and are very glad we did. The Forum itself was much more crowded. Maybe go when it first opens. We were there later on an afternoon and it got busier and busier.

I would just play it by eye, if it looks crowded, go elsewhere. My general rule for free days, is that is a good day to stay away from anyplace popular. It is a great day to see some of the lesser museums people do not go to often, things that may not be high on your list, or at least for the cost. The Capitoline Museum just above the forum might be an option, as would some of the city museums.

As for crowds and the Palatine, the problem may not be once you are in, but getting in, and maybe navigating the Forum to get there.
