Rome overview of sights by bus

Can you recommend a tour bus that will give us an overview of the sights of Rome? I've read comments about some of the double-decker bus tours, but many of them have been negative. We will be going to Rome in November. Thank you for any suggestions.

Just my opinion, but for Roma I think these buses are useless. You are better off with a walking guide (RS has some good Rome Walks in the book). The buses don't get close enough to many of the sights to be convenient, and are notoriously late.

I agree with Zoe. This is why they get negative reviews. Rome is quite compact: you can walk from the Colosseo to St. Peter's Basilica in less than an hour. Colosseo to Piazza del Popolo in less than 40 minutes. All times dependent on how many pictures you take, of course! Taking walking tours among the sites you want to see gives you a fabulous view of this beautiful, crazy city. In addition to the walks in the Rick Steves book, there is a book called "24 Great Walks in Rome" that I swear by for interesting walks.

Mary Ellen,

I've used the Red Buses in Rome and other cities, and I find they're a good way to get an overview of the main sights prior to exploring them in more detail. The recorded commentary is OK but not overly detailed (be sure to bring your own headphones). The top level of the Bus is also good for getting a few photos. One of the best features is that the tickets are usually good for 24 hours, and you can Hop Off / Hop On as desired.

As long as you don't have expectations of a comprehensive tour experience, the Bus tours are fine and a good way to learn where the sights are located. I find they're also a good way to rest my aching back and legs for an hour or so.

I have taken these buses in other cities and Ken is right, but for Roma, I don't find them worthwhile.

I probably shouldn't admit this, but I also use the "tacky tourist trains" on occasion. Again, it's an interesting way to see some of the main sights, rest my back and get some pictures.
