Rome over New Year's

My family and some friends are planning a trip to Rome over New Year's, with day trips to Florence, Pisa, and Pompeii. We will be there from Dec. 28th to Jan. 8th. Most of us have been to Rome before, but we were with tour groups. This time we are on our own! We are doing a lot of web research about events, closures and "off the beaten path" things to do while we are there, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or suggestions based on experience. Would appreciate tips on dealing with weather, special events going on, things to avoid, stuff like that. We are excited to watch the fireworks at New Year's, but were debating over where to watch them. Also, should we have concerns about terrorist activity, especially on New Year's? I know that large tourist groupings tend to be targets, so we were thinking we would try to stick to places where automobile traffic is limited. Thanks!

The daytime weather is usually about 50 degrees.
You just have to stay alert in crowd gatherings in any city worth going to.
