Rome over Christmas

We are going to be in Rome between December 23 and 28th. Do we need to buy tickets to the Coliseum, Vatican, museums in advance? How crowded will it be that time of year. I have heard it can be worth doing a tour to beat the crowds. Does anyone one know of a good one that isn't expensive. We are 2 adults and a 14 year old girl.

I suggest a Roma Pass, which will let you skip the line at the Colosseo, but only if you will also use it for another site costing €10 or more. A Vatican Tour is an excellent idea. We like Walks of Italy and their Pristine Sistine tour. It's a bit pricey but very much worth the price. Remember the 24th much closes down starting about Noon, but a lot of things reopen on the 26th despite the fact that it is a holiday.
