Rome: Ostia Antica tour questions

I would love to see Ostia Antica but most the tours require taking a train to and from the site. I am wary to schedule something like this in April given that the size of the crowds in Rome are expecting to be huge. Is this a reasonable concern?

Has anyone taken a private tour with transfer to Ostia Antica that they can recommend?

I went to Ostia Antica last May from Rome but we did it on our own using the Rick Steves audio guide (free download). Getting there was fairly easy. I remember taking the metro (subway) and then making one train change that was pretty easy to navigate. The train was not crowded at all. I don't think the Jubilee will have too much of an effect on a visit to Ostia Antica. Hiring a guide would probably have made it a deeper experience but we managed ok with the RS audio guide. I think it depends on your comfort level with taking public transportation. I know I am a bit of a control freak so before I make a trek to a new place I study it in detail in advance. Good luck with you your trip.

No, it is not a reasonable concern. You can always inquire at the TI to see if a private guide is available. The crowds will be centered around the Vatican and that is many miles from OA. Since it is all public transit you don't need to schedule anything in advance so you can wait till you are there. OA is never over run by tourists.
