Rome on the Last Sunday of the Month - Should we do St.Peter's in the AM or the afternoon?

Our cruise gets us into Rome on a Sunday. Arrghh...I know St Peter's Square will be a zoo. Have been to the Vatican Museum so we'lemphasized textl bypass that craziness as it is free.

Here is my question. We are booking a Roma Shuttle to get us from Civitavecchia and back. Would we be best to start at St. Peter's in the AM and end at the Colosseum, or vice-versa? We definitely want to do the inside of St. Peter's and Rick's audiotour, which is awesome - would we be best to do it early or late? Have been to St Peter's for Mass but only during the week so I don't know how a Sunday will be.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Grazie!

Unless you can get to the basilica before 8am I would say to go in the afternoon. There is no way to determine what the lines will be like but they are usually very long in the morning and tend to be shorter in the afternoon. This isn't always the case but you stand a better chance of finding a shorter security line in the afternoon. Most people on cruise tours tend to go in the morning adding to the lineup to get inside.
