Rome on Sunday (in Rome for one day)

Hi ..My wife will be in Rome on a Sunday in October. We would like to see the inside of the Vatican. We are arriving in Rome by Cruise ship and will be at Civitaveccia. What is the best and least expensive way to get to the Vatican?

St Peters will be open as usual.

Unless this is the last Sunday in the month when there it is open for a few hours and a free-for-all because it is free of charge - the Sistine Chapel and all of the Vatican Museums are always closed on Sundays.

Sunday (except the last Sunday of every month, free entrance from 9 am to 12.30 pm; the Museums close at 2 pm unless it coincides with Easter Sunday, the 29th of June (St. Peter and Paul), 25th and 26th of December (Christmas and St. Stephen)

Is it St Peters or the museums (and Sistine Chapel) that you had hoped to see?

Is it the Last Sunday?

Best and least expensive don't necessarily travel well together.

Tell us more. How long are you in port? Any walking or other health issues? Just the two of you?

What else, if anything, do you want to see in Rome? Is this a repeat visit or first time?

Which is more important, speed or money?

Actually this is the one time that least expensive and best way might be the same. The train works very well. From the entrance to the cruise port at Civit... it is a ten minute walk to the train station. You can see it on your left, straight down the walk along the beach. Catch any Regionale train headed to Rome Termini and get off at St. Peter's stop and walk over to the Vatican. It is about an hour from Civit.... It would be best to buy you train ticket ahead of time since the little station at Civit. gets jammed with the cruise ships. At any station in Italy or travel agency you can buy a Regional ticket RT. You have to validate it (time stamp) it in a little blue/green/yellow box on the back of the station. Just watch locals are going it. Also, see RoninRome.com for detail info on getting to Civit... from Rome. Follow in reverse.
