Rome on Italy’s Independence Day (June 2nd)

My family and I are taking a Mediterranean cruise and will be in Rome in June 2nd, which we just found out is their Independence Day. Dora anyone have tips? There are supposed to be military parades, etc., and very crowded. Is it worth it to get tickets to the colosseum or St Peters basilica? WE are traveling with 5 kids aged 6-17.

We have been in Rome a number of times during the first week of June and hardily noticed any difference. We always stay in the Termini area so maybe that area is not as affected. Was surprised to learn that June 2nd was independence day. Sorry I am not more helpful.

It's not Independence Day, it is the Festa della Repubblica or Day or the Republic. June 2nd, 1946 is when Italy held a referendum to decide whether they wanted to stay a Kingdom or become a Republic (and Italians chose the latter).
The military parade is generally held on the Viale dei Fori Imperiali, near the Colosseum, so I'm not even sure it will be open that day. The Vatican was just be as busy as any other holiday in June.
