Rome on EASTER WEEKEND!

We are planning on being in Rome on EASTER WEEKEND! We are not Catholic but just thought it would be neat to be at the center of all the excitement! I am afraid we will be at the center of ALL THE CROWDS!!! I have never been to Italy and I am not a crowd lover! I am almost dreading it!
We fly into Milan on March 27 and out of Rome on Mon.,April 13. Is it worth the $150 to change this to fly into Rome on March 27 and fly out of Florence on April 13(spend Easter weekend in Florence)? I am just concerned that if we don't already have hotel reservations we won't get them for Rome on Easter and everything will be sky high!

Is it worth the $150 to change the air tickets or should we just leave it the way it is fly into Milan take a train to Rome on the 27th then a train back to Milan on the 29th, then on the 11th of April - take a train to Florence spend the weekend and get a train to Rome on Monday the 13th and fly out. Sounds like a lot of train time to me and it could be more expensive. I don't understand enough about the trains to even know if this is a crazy idea of not. I am sure it will not be cheap and will probably cost me more than $150. HELP! Thanks so much! Karen

Hopefully we'll hear from one or more of our Regular Repliers who live in Italy. In the meantime, here's a link to a prior discussion of Easter in Rome, see esp. the 1st post by Ron of Rome http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/helpline/index.cfm?topic=19849Not only hotels but also public transportation is significantly impacted by the large crowds of locals, pilgrims from all over the world, and the regular tourists that aren't there as pilgrims, all flowing into Rome at one time.
