My husband, daughter (8 years) and I will be going to Rome over Labor Day weekend and I am trying to find an inexpensive place to stay (apartment/hotel/B&B??). Would it be advisable to stay outside of the city and train in?
We live in Germany, will fly into Pisa and take the train into Rome.
Thank you. Jackie
Look for hotels around the termini station. these are usually the least expensive. You can use venere.com to find hotels in that area. It's a safe area close to the metro, restaurants and not too far from the sites. You'll easily be able to walk to most of the sites from there or take the metro or a bus to the ones farther away.

Inexpensive is difficult in Rome. go for a hostel that has private rooms.
Jacqueline, when I was in Rome in May, I stayed at a great hostel just down the street from Termini called The Beehive. They offer dormstyle rooms, as well as, hotel type family accommodations. I highly recommend the place. It was very centrally located, very personable staff and served the best breakfast that I had on my trip. You must book well in advance because it is a very popular place. See below for web address.
As usual we do ask you to first define inexpensive. For some inexpensive is $200/night.
I agree with Lynda try the beehive it is a great place near Termini Station.
Another recommendation for The Beehive. A tremendous value (sort of a "boutique hostel" for lack of a better term), whether you pick one of the hostel rooms or private rooms (which share a bath).
Though I've never stayed there I have heard wonderful things about the beehive and it's sister at cross polinate.
