Hi, we plan to visit in October. Love to hear about reasonable and reasonably quiet rooms for rent. Thanks!
I stayed at Hotel Italia. It was 60 euro (5% discount for cash payment) for a single in February (October will be more). Clean, quiet, AC, good location - right off La Nazionale, with a good supermarket across the way and a couple of nearby nice trattorias, reasonably priced. Breakfast was ok and there was free wifi.
It's worth spending a few $$ more to be closer to the sights.
PS - I needed the AC in February to heat the room. It was an individual unit with a remote. In October you will need it too, but not for heat :-)
Steve, you'll probably get better comments if you give a specific amount or range that you consider "reasonable." And are you talking about hotel/B&B lodging or renting an apartment?
Thanks, Michael! We plan to stay for up to a week. Six folks. So probably a hotel with 3x2 rooms. I'l like to budget $100 per night. With or without breakfast. Hmm. A B&B would be nice.
$100 per night per couple? That will be very difficult to do in Rome unless you stay at a hostel or a dive. Rome is very expensive. Hard to find decent lodging in or near the historic center for less than 120 euros a night for a couple. Do you have the RS Rome book? (Or even the RS Italy book?) They'll help give you a context for prices.
Check out Il Colle degli Ulivi. It a B&B about a 30 minute train ride outside of Rome. It offers the quiet you're looking for in the right price range.
We haven't stayed there yet (3 more months and we'll be there) but it came highly recommended to us and has a 100% rating on TripAdvisor (I'll put the link below). I've chatted with the owners a few times and they are very warm and welcoming. The offer customized tours and home cooked dinners as well (breakfast is included).
Check out the options at the B & B Association of Rome. We used them to find a reasonably-priced room near the Vatican.
Suggest you also look at santasuesanna.org, click on coming to Rome, for a list of convents that will be in your price range. I usually stay at Santa Maria alle Fornachi which is about a brisk 5 minute walk from the Vatican, however, would expect them to be booked.
Also, would urge yolu not to wait to make reservations where ever you think you will stay as October is busy because of the fall school break in Germany, and when I was last in Rome in October, I swore no one was left in Germany!
There is a poster(Andreas?) from Germany who may be able to offer some insight as to when the break is this year.
Michael, Kari, Chani, Sharon, jerry ... many thanks!

You can begin your search using venere.com and tripadvisor.com. They both will provide a large selection of hotels, prices, map locations, and customer reviews.
Roma is a major leading world class city and $100 per night is going to put you in a not great place. Prices are higher here than in other parts of Italy. However, generally I've found that hotels cost more there than in the USA. You might also consider an apartment large enough for 6. This may meet your needs better than a hotel.
Buon viaggio,
RB
Ya know, the apartment is a great idea. We love to cook. We found a great place, convent, to stay in Sicily a few years ago that offered us kitchen privileges.
