Rome --> Nettuno--> Pompei in May

After spending 3-4 days in Rome, we will be driving to Nettuno to see the WWII memorial sites for a few days (I think 3 days / 2 nights should be adequate), then driving down to Pompei for an undetermined number of days (5-6?). I am curious to hear how many days anyone felt as optimal for Nettuno / Anzio as well as for Pompei. We are very strong hikers/walkers. Also, any recommendations on sites or towns to stop and enjoy in the region? We are not super fond of big cities, so I had not mentioned Naples. If anyone can share some "must see's" there, it would be much appreciated. Maybe a small hotel on the outskirts so we can use public transportation in the city to avoid driving?

Thanks in advance!
Happy Trails!!

We took the train to Nettuno to see the American cemetery. I'm not sure you need time elsewhere in the town..it's nice enough but did not call to us to linger after lunch..

Look at staying in the medieval town of Sant' Agati de Goti:

There are also some agriturismi in the vicinity of Naples but I've not stayed in any of them:

You might also look at small hotels on the Sorrentine peninsula, like this one:
