Rome Neighborhoods – Where to stay? Family of four with two teenage girls

My wife & I visited Rome almost 20 years ago. We stayed near the top of the Spanish Steps. We are planning to return with our two teenage daughters (13 & 16) for four nights in late June 2017, and we’re looking for a good neighborhood to stay. We anticipate visiting the usual tourist sites but want to balance that with exploring, discovering and just hanging out in parts of the city not surrounded by tons of tourists. That said, we will most likely walk everywhere so we’d like to stay in an area that is interesting and trendy but also centrally located. We will most likely just sleep in our accommodation but will spend a lot of time in the immediate neighborhood.

Our original thought was to stay in the Trastevere neighborhood, but we think it may be too far south away from the city center. We have narrowed our search to the below areas, but are open to any ideas & comments.

  1. Trevi Fountain, Pantheon or Piazza Navona
  2. Campo de Fiori or Jewish Ghetto,
  3. Monti.

Yes, we know the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Navona even Campo di Fiori are major tourist sites. However, if we find a place to stay a few blocks away (not next door to the site) would we be disappointed with the constant tourist crowds? Also, is everything around each site targeted to tourists and not the culture we have come so far to see?

We are kind of leaning towards Monti or the area southeast of Campo de Fiori – Jewish Ghetto. Accommodations are less expensive but would this be a good choice for a family? Are parts of these neighborhoods a little seedy? We understand Rome is relatively safe, but are these areas age appropriate for teenage girls? Would we enjoy eating, hanging out and interacting with others - just trying to get a sense of the vibe?

Final thoughts – Apartments seem to be way more economical for four than a hotel. We are expecting to spend under $200/night (perhaps $160). Any recommendations are appreciated.

I like Trastevere best, but if you want to be close to the sights, I would search in the order you indicated: 1, 2, and lastly 3.
However, before choosing Monti, I'd look into Trastevere. If you stay near Piazza S. Maria in Trastevere, it's not that far.

I had two separate stays in Rome this summer: 3 nights near Campo di Fiori, then a few weeks later, 5 nights in Prati. Both were very walkable areas and I had nice apartments. I'd choose Prati hands down from now on, and so would my friends. Quieter, but close to Vatican, Trastevere, and river crossings. We loved hanging out at Castel Sant'Angelo, found great restaurants and real shopping in the area. It's closer to the main sights than Trastevere, imo. Here's where I stayed: San Pietro Arte in Suite

The noise below my window in Campo di Fiori never stopped. Literally. Parties all night, then deliveries early morning. I had to keep the windows closed, run the a/c, and wear earplugs all night to get any sleep.

Having said that, I liked Monti for the same reasons as Prati but didn't stay there. I'd choose either Prati or Monti over any other central neighbourhood. I took the bus at night by myself from Monti to Prati with no safety concerns. I'm a short middle-aged woman so more invisible than teenage girls, but I had no security issues in Rome and I was there alone for several days after my friends left.

ETA: this sounds like what you said you wanted: the Prati District

Head straight to this apartment:
https://www.vrbo.com/320914

It's perfectly located and a perfect apartment for a family of 4.

The slight larger sister apartment next door is also wonderful:

We stayed in the first apartment on our very first trip and met the owners as they were cleaning the place in preparation for our arrival. At that time they lived the in neighboring apartment (the 2nd one I mentioned).

Parts of both Trastevere and Monti can become college-student heavy drinking party-central in the late evenings. In Monti, that's esp. true around the Piazza della Madonna dei Monti. In Trastevere, it's the area between Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere and Piazza Trilussa.

My favorite area is Prati. Beautiful non-touristy neighborhood. Vatican is in this area. The bus system in Rome is very good. You can get around Rome easily on the bus or metro if you don't feel like walking. Prati is across the river from the crowded historic center which is why it is so pleasant.

Hi Everyone, Thanks for the quick responses.

Tim your recommendation near Campo de Fiori looks very interesting & right in the middle of the action.

Sounds like the Prati neighborhood is definitely worth looking into as well. We haven't really considered this area at all. From everyone's descriptions & links this seems to be just what we are looking for just across the river. Is there any particular street or piazza(s) in Prati to check out? Is closer to the river better (closer to the city center)? Any areas to stay away from?

Bret, we've also stayed in Prati on one of our trips to Rome and liked the neighborhood very much. It felt less tourist-centered and was quiet at night. Our hotel was located on Via degli Scipioni, very close to the river, but with 4 of you, you probably want an apartment somewhere in the general neighborhood. There were no areas at all (that we saw) which needed to be avoided: very safe, and we walked often at night. Then again, we've walked much of Rome at night without worry.

I don't know as I'd have called our location "centrally located" as while we were close to some of the things we wanted to see, we were considerably farther away from others but being big walkers, that didn't bother us. We also had the Lepanto metro station very nearby if we'd wanted to use it.

Agree with Kathy that nowhere in Prati is unsafe. It is a newer residential neighborhood, newer meaning not medieval like Trastevere. Lots of nice mid-rise apartment buildings and lovely streets with high-end homes. As for a location near transportation hubs, the largest Prati bus hub is in Piazzale Clodio where dozens of local buses come and go.

If you look in Prati, I suggest looking near Castel Sant'Angelo and Piazza Cavour. That is very close to two bridges across the river, walking distance to Vatican and, walking away from the river, close to the shopping street described in the link I posted. Farther away from the river is nice too, but you would definitely have to wrap your head around the bus system as you'll be tired after a day across the river. We really enjoyed dinner at Trattoria ai Villini, a very traditional place, but there are some very modern, hip places around too that I'd like to try next time.

The restaurant/bar at the top of Castel Sant'Angelo has killer views of St. Peter's and is a terrific spot for a drink and a rest. The food looked good but expensive.

ETA: a bus that ran straight through the historic centre to the Coliseum and the foot of Monti was 1 short block away from the apartment I posted. Very easy.

Last year I took my 14-year-old grandson to Rome for a four-night visit before traveling on to Munich. We stayed at a convent, Casa per ferie Il Rosario, on Quirinal Hill. It's centrally located on Via Sant'Agata dei Goti, close to the Forum of Augustus, Via Cavour, the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia. The room was sparse, but clean, quiet, and of ample size. A good breakfast was served each morning. Cost was reasonable, considering the location. If you can live with the 11 pm curfew, it can be an excellent choice.
