Rome/ Naples hotels

I'm sure this has been discussed a zillion times but.......planning on going to either Rome or Naples sometime in August. If anyone could give me some suggestions on where to stay in either place it'd be appreciated. Looking for something reasonable and decent and the only real requirements I have is AC in the rooms and parking available. If Rome I would rather stay near the sights to cut down on the driving but if Naples I'm open to surronding areas as we plan to see Capri, Sorrento and Pompeii. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, if anyone would happen to have a phone# for their suggestion that would be good.Guess I should mention that this would be for a family of four.

Thanks
Ron

We stayed at Hotel Portoghesi a few years ago and enjoyed the convenient location near Piazza Navona and other central sights.

It still get good reviews on tripadvisor.

I'm not sure if there is parking at the hotel but I'm sure they'd give you information on that if contacted.

Google the hotel and you can easiliy get to their web site.

We just returned from a trip to Rome. Stayed at Hotel Piranessi in Piazza del Popolo. Via del Corso is a street that takes you all the way to the Senate Building and hits the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Piazza Navona. It was splendid not having to take a taxi to any of those places.

The svc at the hotel was excellent, no issue whatsoever.

Take a look at this one for Rome:

I've stayed there the last couple of trips and think it's an all-time good deal. It's locaed near nothing to the east of the city center, BUT it has a shuttle to Termini around eight or nine, and a couple of returns (early and late evening). It's modern, air conditioned, and has gated parking. It's also easy to hit from the eastern freeways.

In Naples, Ive started staying here the last two trips:

It's air conditioned and has plenty of on-street parking and your car will be fine. Some people don't like the area since it's non-touristy by american standards. I like it, so does my wife.

any guide book, such as the ones Rick Steves publishes, will recommend many hotels for you to consider.

When you're in Rome I seriously hope you weren't planning on driving to the sights! You will seriously regret trying to sightsee by driving from your hotel and parking. You don't need or want a car when in any major European city, except for excursions outside of it (and most of those, such as Naples or Sorrento, are easily reached by public transit).

As for the Amalfi coast, many people on this forum prefer to stay in Sorrento instead of Naples. Less gritty, feels safer.

Will be driving to Rome from northern Italy but for the sightseeing I'll be hoofin' it or using public transit.

We were in Rome and Amalfi coast recently. Let me receomend Hotel Nerva in Rome as tremendous location for sightseeing-central to everything and a wonderful staff. Some folks complain about small baths but read trip advisor and see what you think.

As far as Naples, I highly recommend staying in Sorrento and taking a quick and fun ferry into Naples and sight seeing and heading back to Sorrento. Sorrento is clean, fun , and beautiful-words that I can`t use to describe Naples so much.

Having said that we are glad we spent a day in Naples
Great museums
