Rome-Naples easier/better by train or bus/shuttle, Also on Sundays

Just wondering what peoples experiences have been. I will be in Rome for 10 days from the end of April to the 8 of May and we are planning a day trip to Naples/Pompeii and we are leaning towards taking the train but a friend is leaning towards doing a shuttle/bus to get there. Just wondering what people have found to be the easiest. I have the Rome 2007 book and Rick seems to have a very good iterniry on how to go by train. Also is the train cheaper than the other options?

Has anyone gone to Naples/Pompeii on a Sunday? We are limited in the days we can go and the Sunday seems to be our best option.

You can find and book a train at http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index from Rome to Naples and they have newer fast trains that take only 1 1/2 hours. You can then transfer the local Circumvesuviana train in the same station and Pompii is right outside the the Pompei Scavi, Villa dei Misteri stop. It is easy. and when in Pompii check out the Cameo Shop, my wife loves it when we go.

Taking the train to Naples is really fast and easy - just make sure you take one of the IC Plus trains that goes to Naples Central station (Napoli Centrale). Transfering to the local train can be done right in the train station. If I remember correctly, the ride to Naples was less than 2 hours and the ride from Naples to Pompeii was about 30 minutes. We bought our tickets a couple days before at Rome Termini. There were several specials, including a buy one get one free deal... Check the promotions page on the English version of the Trenitalia website.
