Roundtrip flight to Rome. Arrive June 27. Have 3 nights booked there; plan more in Rome before flying home. Headed south to Naples and Almafi Coast. There are SOOOOO many possibilities. Flight back to Miami on July 30. Seasoned backpacker, now retired, all types of accommodation ok. Thought about adding Puglia, but I'd rather quality than spreading the route too thin. Any information much appreciated.
The Napoli area deserves at the very least 4 or 5 nights, but you can easily spend weeks and not run out of things to do.
Rome for 4 nights in total is good.
You have a full month at your disposal, so Puglia can easily fit (a full week would be my very minimum, but the sky is the limit if you want)
Thank you for responding. Thinking of going from Rome to Pozzuoli area, then out to Procida, then Ischia, then Capri. From there to Naples for 4 days. Or, is it best to go to Naples first? Is it difficult to find rooms if you "wing it" as we used to be able to do? Some say you need all reservations made--but that cramps the freedom. Help. Thanks in advance!!
I love Puglia and highly recommend it. However, that part of Italy will probably be scorching hot during the timeframe you are contemplating. I know it seems an odd suggestion when you look at a map, but I'd head up to the Dolomites for part of July. At altitude, it should be very pleasant. "Pleasant" is definitely not how I would describe the weather I experienced in Puglia between July 6 and July 10, 2015.
Lucky you to have a month in Italy! I would allow a night (or two max) in Naples with a day to visit Pompeii. Before going to Pompeii we visited the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, which makes for a nice coupling with a visit to Pompeii. From Naples, Capri is an easy ferry. I would advise staying overnight on Capri -- ideally, two or three -- to experience it after the cruise ship tourists depart. From Capri, you can take a ferry to Positano and Amalfi. We added Sicily to our itinerary, which was an easy flight from Naples. Enjoy!
