Rome museums and ruins - tickets in advance?

Hi Travelers!

What attractions do you recommend purchasing tickets in advance?

We have purchased timed tickets for the colosseum in the early morning, and tickets for the Borgese gallery, we will also purchase early morning tickets for the Vatican museums, last time I checked they were not available yet but should be soon.

Are there any others we should be purchasing before the day of?

Thanks!

I would highly recommend visiting the Domus Aurea site, about a 10 minute walk from the Colosseum. It is a current archeological site that is open for tours on the weekend when excavations have been halted. It is a large palace built by Nero. At some point in time the interior was filled with dirt and the exterior was covered over with dirt and it disappeared from memory. Your tour guide will be a current or former Archeologist from the site and it has an excellent VR presentation showing what the palace may have looked like when it was in use. You can get tickets on line here: https://www.coopculture.it/en/heritage.cfm?id=51#

If you’re insterested I’m seeing more of he Vatican, I’d look at doing a Garden Tour. It was seriously wonderful and offers a great look of the Dome. Such a beautiful peaceful place and no crowds to battle since it can only be seen by tour. A Scavi Tour (seeing the excavations under St Peter’s and the theoretical site of St Peter’s tomb) is also really really cool...though they might already be booked up as only about 250 people a day get to do the tour in total (about 12-15 per tour). But you could inquire! Instructions are on their website and in the RS book.
