Rome museum bag restrictions

My wife and I have a Scavi tour planned and I think I remember reading we’re not allowed to bring a bag to that, is that correct?

Can anyone tell me if the Vatican or Colosseum have bag restrictions as well? The only bag I would have his my sling bag in front of me (about the size of a 10” tablet) and my wife’s backpack. Has anyone had issues with either of these?

Not specifically about that tour, but I noticed in many galleries and museums that they really restricted backpacks, even if they were the same size or smaller than the sling camera bag that I was using. I don't know why, but it seemed the guards decided (or were told) that "backpacks" couldn't be admitted, regardless of size. (for reference, my camera bag is about 12" x 15" x 5".) The Borghese, on the other hand, didn't allow people to take in any bag bigger than a small fanny pack of about 4" x 6". People who didn't want to leave their wallets and didn't have pockets were given clear plastic 8" x 10" bags for their wallets/phones, etc.

It's no mystery as to why backpacks aren't allowed in many museums, especially when worn on the back. People wearing backpacks don't have a subconscious awareness that they're twice their normal size, so they can accidently turn and hit a piece of valuable art with the backpack.

Think about how much crap you really need to pack around with your all day - my life got a lot better when I figured out that I didn't need a purse around town. I wear my phone on a bandolier and put necessities in pockets -- so much more pleasant than all those years of lugging a heavy shoulder bag.

backpacks are generally inconsiderate, bumping walls and art and other people. The Scavi Tour doesn't allow bags and when we took it (long ago so you need more recent intelligence on this) there was nowhere to store a purse in the Scavi office as the tour ends in St. Peters. we went to the check room to the right of St. Peters and checked my purse (in the unenlightened purse carrying days) and then headed to the Scavi office which was to the left of St. Peters.
