Rome / mobility impaired

We’ve been to italy before and seen the big three. This time we just wanted a week in Rome. My wife is suffering some health issues and may not be walking long distances
How handicapped accessible is Rome in general?
Can one rent wheelchairs from the airport or some place centrally located?
Any other thoughts on Rome for mobility bound?
Thanks,

Pat

I love Rome, but it was definitely not pedestrian friendly. Trying to cross the major streets with traffic whizzing by was nerve racking at first. Plus, Rome is ancient and so you'll not find a lot of places that are handicapped-friendly like the US because they're too costly or difficult to retrofit. Maybe things have changed since my trip but that was my impression.

Might be a good idea to hire a car for half days. Or take bus tours, but then u have stairs.
And taxi for quick rides. Rome is not aplace for
Most of the streets and sidewalks are cobbled , broken ,curbed.
Also, Ck with your hotel to make sure the bathroom / shower is suitable.

Another option would to stay in a B&B on the outskirts of the city. The Roman suburbs have many interesting travel sights that most travelers to Rome never see. Some come with a host willing to drive you from place to place.
See OliveTreeHill.com. Ivano is a fantastic guide, and he is famous for his midnight tour of Central Rome.

You are going to have your work cut out for you in visiting historic sights in Rome if you are dealing with limited mobility issues. Lots of steps, uneven (but historic) paving, and seemingly chaotic traffic are the principle obstacles. The good news is many historic sites have at least some provisions for the handicapped and the folks on staff are usually very helpful. The big issue will be traveling between sites. I know there are a few firms that offer ‘golf car tours’ that might fit your needs very well. I’ve never used them but have read reports from folks who have and found their services to be just the ticket for getting around. I’m sure they’re not cheap but they may be you best option for getting as much out of your time in Rome.

Adding to the info above, we had several mobility challenged last fall we used this group and couldn't have been more pleased.

All e-mails were answered promptly, we set the route and sites we wanted to see. Driver/guide were very well versed on their city and lots of fun. The area we covered in 4 hours would have taken 2-3 days for some in our group. Keep in mind, this is a leisurely trip, with stops at some of the most famous sites. You don't go in. It just gives you an exceptional overview of the city.

You might check and see if they would let you join one of their set tours.

I also have trouble walking distances. We have traveled to Rome several times with our own wheelchair. There are challenges, but we have never regretted having the chair or going to Rome. Trams are easy to get on with wheelchairs. And it’s nice to have the chair for the airports. Please feel free to contact me if you want more information.
