My husband is very interested in war museums and military history. I have yet to find any info if such a thing exists in Rome (I admit I havnt lookedto far yet!) something like the Imperial War Museums in London which even I found immensely interesting. Would appreciate any info and then I will check it out online. Thanks
Try the museum at the Monument to Victor Emmanuel. There is a memorial on the outskirts of the city, the Fosse Ardeatina, to the Romans who were murdered in reprisals for several German soldiers killed during the occupation of Rome in WWII. I am sure there are others as well.
Judy,
There are numerous military history sites in Rome. One of the best sources of information that I've found is THIS website from Loyola University.
I have visited the Fosse Ardeatine mentioned in the previous reply, and it's a very moving experience. If you plan on going there, it would be a good idea to do a bit of pre-reading on the background. There's an interesting story about how one of the main perpetrators was finally brought to justice many years after the war ended, somewhat by coincidence. It's somewhat on the outskirts of the city, but not too hard to reach by public transit.
Museo storico della motorizzazione militare.
It is a large collection of military vehicles (mostly italians) of the WWI - Cold War period. It includes trucks, cars, motorbikes, bikes, tanks, harmored vehicles, airplanes, helicopters.
The address is : Viale dell'esercito 170, ROMA.
No english website, but plenty of info in italian on the web.
Here is a nice presentation video:
The italian air force museum at Vigna di Valle. Some 50 kilometers northwest of Rome (better rent a car to get there).
The history of italian aviation, including the record-breaking MC-72 hydroplane.
Here is the website (in english, unbelievable!):
