Rome: method of payment in metro?

I'm a teacher and I'm going to Rome with my school ( and 120 students) and we need to buy lots of tickets for the metro in Rome. Would it be possible to pay the tickets with Visa? We always buy at the ticket office of Battistini. Uptil now we used cash. But we would like to use Visa for security reasons. Do they accept Visa at the ticket office?
(We want single tickets, not any other type of ticket, because they turn out more expensive and we need hundreds of them.)

I'm pretty sure in June of 2018 we used a credit card (visa) to buy our 72 hour passes from a ticket office in the Spagna metro station. (I bought 4 total, and saw others buying for larger groups when i was there).

for the 72 hour pass, we only had to take 12 rides to break even..so every ride after taht was "free" so i wouldn't write off a pass (you didn't advise how long you would be there, or plans so i'm just mentioning this. If you are there for only a day, then you would need to ride 5 times to make the 24 hour pass worth it).

I would email them at [email protected] to inquire about a group discount/rate.

I dont see why they would be "cash only".

I don’t know the answer to your question, but wow, you will have earned a glass of wine each evening in your room!

If I was herding 120 students (and presumably somewhere between 5 and 10 adults) around Rome I'd probably prefer to use 3 full sized coaches to get around along with walking.

Trying to herd 130 people onto the Metro and get them all off at the right stops and back to the surface would be a nightmare for me.

It it were me I'd have the local fixer speaking to ATAC to see what they can do for you.

Have you emailed ATAC reagarding "For Large Customers"?

"Large Customers" is the translation for groups, and apparently there are discounts available.

Yes, herding a group of 120 will be challenging, especially with individual tickets. You will have to instruct each one on how to validate their tickets or risk having some of them fined. On the Metro, you probably will not get everybody on the same train, they're often packed. Public buses? Fageddaboutit!

Thank you for all your anwers and your concern. Some explanation:
- No, at night in my room, I don't drink wine, too tired, just sleeping! :-)
- Yes, we travel the metro, we divide the students into smaller groups and we travel independent from each other. Within the group we look after each other. (Students are not children but 17-18 year olds)
- No, we don't need another type of ticket, we stay for 3 days, but we only use the metro 7 times. (Max 3 x a day.) So it costs us max 4.5 euro a day.
