Patrick, whilst the above mentioned maps are okay (at best), buy a decent foldout map at either the airport or at Termini if you take the train into Rome. Mine has done several trips with me, and more with friends, and is still going strong.

I suggest buying a laminated folding map, like the one made by Streetwise (available thru amazon.com). It won't tear like the paper ones and you don't have to worry about stains or rain. They're about 9 bucks and worth it.

Once you get here you may want to supplement you map with the local ROMA METRO-BUS map, usually about 6 euros. It will list all the bus routes, metro routes, etc, right on the map. Very handy for "plotting your path" from point A to point B - and will save you a lot of walking!

I second what Michael said about the Streetwise map. It was very useful to us on our recent trip, and I also liked that it had the Metro map on it as well.

Hi Patrick, I just splurged and bought the Streetwise Map of Rome with all the streets on it. It is laminated and folds to about 2x5 approximately. It was about $9 and I purchased it through Amazon. I didn't like spending the $9 (I'm frugal!!!) but decided where it was laminated and small, what the heck!

Hi Patrick, I just purchased the streetwise maps also and got them directly thru their site...streetwise.com. They offer a better deal of all three cities, Rome, Venice, Florence & a driving road map of the whole country for the price of $25...well worth it! They are great maps like all posters have said.

Patrick,
I really like Moleskine's Roma Journal. It not only has a map of Rome (and surrounding areas), but a Metro map, conversion chart, and tabs to write down your favorite spots. Check it out on Amazon, it is around $15.

Hi Patrick,

Go to your local Barnes and Noble book store and purchase a "STREETWISE MAP" of Rome, this is a perfect laminated fold out city map of Rome detaling all the major sights. Streetwise also has maps available for other major cities in Italy.

I have to tell you that the best map of Rome we have used is the one given out free at the tourist info centers. I carried one from home the first couple trips to Rome until I discovered the free ones.

The one drawback with the Streetwise maps is that they don't show all the streets, just the mid-sized to main ones.
