Hello again! We are stuck between three different neighborhoods to stay in Rome- Trastevere, San Giovanni, and San Lorenzo. Any opinions on the areas (good and/or bad please)? Should we consider another location altogether? We hope to do most of the common tourist sites and will be out explore all day. Proximity to train/bus stops is important to us. Thank you for the help!
Trastevere will have the most options for evening/night scenic strolls, restaurants, etc. It will require a walk, bus or tram ride to get to the Centro Storico. Have you considered Piazza Navona/Pantheon/Campo dei Fiori?
Thank you Zoe! We will be staying in an AirBnB property and these are the areas we've found within our budget and the dates we're going (mid-Sept). We're just using it as our base to sleep and will be spending very little time in the apartment since we only have 3 days to see the sights in Rome!
We recently stayed in Trastavere. We were one block from the tram line and just a short 10 minute walk to Campo de Fiore. It really depends on where you are in Trastavere as to how much of a hike you have to the sights. We really enjoyed the area and I would stay there again. We rented an apartment through VRBO.
Stephen,
If I may ask, what was the name of the vrbo property that you rented and would you recommend it?
We loved Hotel Lancelot - mentioned both in RS guide and Karen Brown's guide. Very nice, quiet area not far from Colosseum and easy buses to the rest of the city. We had a room with a terrace with great view. They have wonderful breakfasts and also serve very good dinners at large tables where you can meet other travelers from around the globe. We used the dinners a lot - after tromping around all day it was very nice not to have to go out again searching for a restaurant. Mrs. Khan, the owner, and other staff were extremely helpful with transportation and arranging tickets to museums.
Susan- the Hotel Lancelot looks great! Unfortunately, it's well outside our budget.
We stayed in an apartment just SE of the Campo di Fiori in July and found the location to be ideal. My second choice would be Trastevere so if you have found something there that appeals to you, I would go ahead and stay there. We found that we spent more time in the apartment than we thought we would - we would go out early and hit the sights, have lunch, then return to the apartment for a "siesta," a shower, and then back out in the later afternoon/evening for more sights, dinner, strolling, etc. it was good to have a place to escape the heat and crowds for part of the day. If you are traveling during cooler months (which I would if we were not bound by school schedules) it will be less of an issue.
In late May my grandson and I stayed at Casa il Rosario, a Dominican convent. It's on Via Sant' Agata dei Goti on Quirinal Hill, just a couple of blocks behind the wall of the Forum of Augustus, convenient to the Coliseum, Forums, Piazza Venezia, Campidoglio, and more. It's clean and quiet, with a good breakfast served in the morning. Downside for some is that there is an 11 pm curfew, but that was no problem for us. It was 94 € per night for the two of us.
It's a six-minute walk (450 meters) to the Cavour Metro station.

Here is a link to the apartment that we stayed in.
It is located 2 blocks from Santa Cecelia church and the Rick Steves' Trastavere Walk takes you right by the front door of the apartment. It is in a safe, great location and the views are nice. They have a small elevator so getting luggage up to the apartment is easy. Two people can fit comfortably in it to avoid the hike up the stairs after a long day of walking! Having two bedrooms and two baths is nice and the price is reasonable. I would definitely recommend this property.
