Hi: Does anyone know if this even exists: to find lodging in Rome (maybe Trastevere neighborhood?!) that is not super expensive, i.e., no more than 90 euros per night? We have been to italy before, but never to Rome. Are we being unrealistic?! Can anyone recommend a place? thank you!
Rome is expensive overall, but some bargains exist. Check out Little Italy B&B It's not Trastevere but it is convenient, near transportation.
Michele, What time of year will you be visiting Rome? The price will vary between "high season" and "low season", so it may be possible to find something in the €90 range (but you may have to increase your budget slightly, or choose a different neighborhood). You might find it helpful to have a look at the Italy 2013 Guidebook for hotel listings in various parts of Rome. You could also check the excellent www.roninrome.com website. Finally, check the website for The Beehive Hotel/Hostel as a double there should be in your price range (however it's in the Termini area). Whichever place you choose, I'd recommend booking EARLY. Happy travels!
Check EuroCheapo for discount lodging. I've had good luck with them. I've also had single rooms in convents/monasteries for 50-60 E/night, generally with breakfast included. You could check monasterystays.com, which includes a small booking fee, but it will gives you an idea of what's available.
Try monasterystays.com, santasusanna.org, or booking.com. I have found inexpensive places at these sites.
As mentioned, a lot depends on the time of year you'll be there. Also, you don't say how many nights you'll be there, but you can often find apartments that are much less expensive than hotels/B&Bs. Try vrbo.com and airbnb.com. In 2011 we stayed in a tiny place near Campo de' Fiori and it was under 100 euros a night. It was like living on a boat - a very well-located boat. We used the Bed and Breakfast Association of Rome (http://www.b-b.rm.it/) to find a B & B for around 90 Euro near the Vatican a couple of years ago. Their website if pretty easy to navigate. Also, last fall we stayed at Hotel Aberdeen near Termini for around 100 Euro per night.
Thanks everyone for your replies. We will be there June 1 and June 2, approximately. We have a rental car and are thinking about parking in Orvieto, or a parking lot outside of Rome. Has anyone ever done this? Thanks for all your great advice! Michele from California
