Rome- Location to stay?

We are looking into staying in the Travtevere area in Rome as we have heard it is a great location for lodging. Any hotels that anyone recommended? Have you had a pleasant experience staying in this area? If you didn't like this area, anyplace you would recommend? 3 females in their 20's staying together so are main concern is safety. We know we will have to walk a lot but that seems like no matter where you stay in rome.

Stayed in Trastevere and loved it. We stayed in an Airbnb on the fringe, Vatican side, on Via del Riari, and found it the perfect location to walk everywhere. Every major destination was a 20-30 minute walk (Vatican, Colosseum, Pantheon area), except the Borghese park/museum, but we walked there too). In fact, we initially took a bus to the Colosseum but it took SO long that we walked back and that was far better - getting to be immersed in all the places along the way. Trastevere's a great escape from the crowds, even though it is plenty touristy. Its a pleasant "village" feeling place to walk at night. We were there with our kids and never felt concerned about safety anywhere we went. I thought Trastevere was like the hub of a wheel, with the other parts of Rome the spokes. I dont have specific hotel rec, obv

I always stay in the small hotels around the Main Train station and Metro. It is a fine location for walking and several nice small restaurants near by.
I usually stay at the Contilia a couple short blocks from the Termini Station and found the whole area walkable and safe. Lots of budget hotels in the area
