Rome Location Help

Hi everyone, can someone help me with location? Our goal is to stay somewhere where we can walk comfortably to most the sites. I'm getting confused on the "neighborhoods" and area's. If you were going to Rome wanted to walk most everywhere what area would I look for a Hotel in? Thanks again.

Thanks everyone. I do have RS Rome 2011 and I understand that perfectly, the problem was when I was looking for reviews on Hotels I was given area's or neighborhoods I did not recognize. Thanks so much.

Think about what you want to see first and then look for a hotel or B&B. For example, if one of the main sites you want to see is the Vatican and St. Peters you might choose to stay near Piazza Navona.

You say comfortably walk. Rome is a huge city! The Via Veneto area is popular due to it's proximity to the train station. We actually preferred to stay a little more central which is farther west of the station. If you select a hotel between the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and Pantheon sites, you will be more in the center of the action.

We always stay in the Termini area - 4 times - Aberdeen, Sonya. We view it as easy walking but we are very used to lots of walking. It is hour walk to the Vatican and much less to everything else. Or take one of the buses to the Vatican and work you way back. We like the area just for easy access to public transit and the trains and avoiding Roman taxis. It is not a cozy neighborhood but it is a very functioning neighborhood with good restaurants, laundry, etc.

This is a very common question on this board. The general consensus seems to be the part of the historic center that includes Piazza Navona, Campo de Fiori and the Colisseum. If you don't have the RS Rome or Italy books yet, you should pick up a copy and review in depth what he has to say about the various neighborhoods, then you can pick the one that seems best suited to you.

I guess it depends on what your comfort level is with walking. We stayed by the US Embassy and easily walked to the Forum for our tour there on a Saturday morning. The only place we used the Subway for was to go to the Vatican.

Just got back Friday and stayed in Campo di Fiori. We walked everywhere. Very convenient. About 30 minutes to Vatican, 30 to Colloseum and just around corner from Piazza Navona. Loved the location with the fresh markets daily. We stayed in a B&B Casa de fiori which I highly reccommend. They were very helpful with everything and the rooms were spacious and very clean. Beds very comfortable. Good luck and have a great time.

We stayed near the Rome Termini station at the Hotel [INVALID] Garden recommended in Rick Steves. It is 3 blocks from the station. Aramando and the staff there were very friendly and helpful. The Termini Station area is great because it is the rail and metro (underground) hub, so you can get to anywhere in the city easily. Most parts of Rome are accessible from the metro and you can catch a easily train to other cities you plan to visit in Italy. Rail travel is much better than flying.

I just returned from Rome. We rented an apartment on Via Gulia. Perfect location, and will rent there again next time we find ourselves in Rome. Walking location to EVERYTHING and a very nice location. We stayed by the train station for one night when we returned to Rome for the last night before our flight back the the states. I would not stay here for more than what we did. Our previous location was much more convenient and lovely.
