Hello! Forgive me for asking a question that already has sort of been asked here but I'm getting so much conflicting information! My husband and I are travelling from the US to Verona tomorrow - we fly from Atlanta to Rome, then Rome to Verona. We have no choice but to check two bags as we are staying for some time. We only have a 90 minute layover in Rome. Will we have to collect our checked bags, go through customs, and re-check bags? Is there any chance that we'll even be able to make our connection? Thank you in advance for your help!!
Through tickets or separate tickets?
Calling it a connection suggests the former but you aren't clear.
Sorry, yes, it's a through ticket - one ticket booked from our home in Key West all the way through to Verona.
Your checked bags will then be checked through to Verona, so you do not need to pick them up in Rome. In Rome, assuming that is your first stop coming from the US, you will go through immigration, that can take time, but 90 minutes should be fine.
I am not exactly sure how the Rome airport is set up, but when you arrive, pay attention to signs, some airports do sometimes split those with connecting flights from those arriving as the final destination. You want to do "Connecting Flights". Maybe someone has recent info on that.
If it’s on one ticket with a connection in Rome, which it seems to be, you won’t see your bags til Verona. You will just have to go through immigration in Rome (without suitcases),catch your plane to Verona, and then reunite with your suitcases in Verona before walking through customs. Customs will be just a walk-through an area with signage “nothing to declare.”
Then you should be safe, that your bag will be tagged to Verona and you won't see it until then. Watch the agent tag your bag and discuss with her if she suggests otherwise.
Thank you all so much!! You're the reason I'll be able to sleep tonight! :)
