We are booked to depart for Rome on Sat. Nov. 21, returning home on Sat. Nov. 29. ITA airways has cancelled our return flight and re-booked us on a flight a day earlier. (This is the only date that they could accommodate us, closest to our original return date). Now I’m considering canceling the Friday return flight and booking a flight home through Venice on our originally planned Sat. Nov. 29. All this to say, should I go ahead and rearrange our trip to split time between Rome and Venice? Or should I stick with the plan that ITA has made for us and just enjoy one less day in Rome. It’s only one less day, but for some reason it seems like our trip is being really cut short! We had planned a day trip to Pompeii, but will forgo this, if we decide to leave mid-week for Venice. Keep in mind that I’m traveling end of November with my 16 year old son and his active 83 year old grandmother.
What time does flight depart Venice?
Early am flights are a bit difficult to get to so that’s a consideration
You could do 4 nites in Rome then 3 in Venice
If you stay in Rome the 6 nites you could visit Ostia Antica instead of day trip to Pompeii
Given that you will only have six full days on the ground if you rebook from Venice, and one of those days will be spent travelling from Rome, I'd stick with the Friday Rome flight and enjoy a full five days there.
It sounds like you are in Rome and are going to lose a day there and your option is get the 'extra' day back but you need to fly out of Venice to get it. If you book and 'get that day back' but fly out of Venice your last day will be spent on the logistics of moving everyone from Rome to Venice to catch that new flight.
If I have this right it sounds like your 'extra' day will just become a 'travel to the another airport' day and not be an enjoyable day filled with great experiences. If this is all you are adding to the trip I don't think it is worth it. I understand the frustration, but unless you are adding extra days to actually add Venice to the itinerary you aren't really gaining anything.
My $.02, have a great trip whatever you decide to do,

I agree completely with Hiredman, plus it will likely make all of you more tired as a last day & not worth it. I don’t know if it’s an option, but is there another airline you could use to fly home that wouldn’t be an outrageous cost?
If the flight times are good out of Venice I would do that. You can catch a train from Rome to Venice. I agree with Christine to have 4 nights Rome, 3 nights Venice.
You don't mention your departure city in the States, which makes it difficult to offer advice. If ITA changed your flight, you're entitled to a full refund, yes? Have you looked at other airlines? Have you considered returning on 11/30? The trip as planned is already quite short. Also, what time does the flight depart from Venice - typically they are unreasonably early, considering the difficulty getting to the airport.
most flights to the US from Venice are very early in the morning and only go to a hub city in Europe - often Rome - to complete the journey across the great waters.
Is it possible that you will wind up on just the same flight from Rome after all that work? Not saying that Venice is not the most spectacular place which it is - but I don't want to get out of bed at 3 am or whatever just to go back where I came from...
Thank you to all who commented. We have decided to just remain in Rome for the duration of our trip - too many other variables involved. And though I love the idea of enjoying Venice without the throngs of tourists (like myself😊), I’d rather visit when I have more time and know the weather will be a little more dependable.
