Rome Itinerary - 5 nights

My husband and I are traveling to Italy next May and will be starting our adventure in the Eternal City of Rome! I cannot wait. I've been going through travel books & websites and have come up with a tentative itinerary for our 5 days and I would really appreciate feedback...ie did I miss anything really important to see or am I cramming too much into one day, etc. So here goes...

Day 1 (Tuesday) Arrive in Rome after a very long overnight flight where we probably won't sleep too much. We arrive at 10:45am and will have to retrieve our luggage and get from the airport to Termini then make our way to our apartment, check in, orient ourselves to the neighborhood, get a few groceries, unpack. In other words its going to be a long, busy & tiring day. I'm thinking either a walk to a nearby church or take the Metro to the Pantheon then have dinner and go to bed early.

Day 2 (Wednesday) St Peters Square, Vatican Museums, St Peters Basilica, Sistine Chapel

Day 3 (Thursday) Roman Ruins day - Arch of Constantine, Circus Maximus, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill & Colosseum

Day 4 (Friday) Plaza Navona, Spanish Steps, thinking of skipping Trevi Fountain due to restoration work there, Galleria Borghese & gardens

Day 5 (Saturday) Day Trip possible - Tivoli, Tuscany or somewhere else ?

Day 6 (Sunday) Breakfast, check out of apartment & head to Venice!

Thanks for your input.

Take a look at the Rick Steves week long tour and that will give you more suggestions as to what there is to do in Rome. Make sure you make reservations for the Vatican and the Galleria Borghese. You cannot go into the Gallerai Borghese unless you have a reservation and you can go into the museum for only two hours. But ( I have been there twice) that will be enough time to see everything. I would not go to the Vatican on a Wed as that is when the Pope has his audience ( which you also need tickets for) but go on Thursday or Friday ( not Sat). There is no metro near the Pantheon ( study the maps to see where the metros are close to), but you can take a bus to the Pantheon and by the Pantheon there are three wonderful churches to see. You need to read the RS Rome book and see the Pilgrams section as he describes all the churches and that is where the most wonderful art is, in the churches.

Are you staying in the Termini section of Rome, if so there are 4 churches in walking distance of that area that are wonderful to visit. I have been to Rome 5 times and went twice on the RS Rome tours, last year I went for the week and this year the RS best of Europe ended in Rome and I was there for three days. You could spend a full day just at the Vatican, as you can stay at the Vatican museum and not just do the tour, see a lot of the museum. Museum is huge and you will not do the whole thing. Send me a Private message and I will answer any questions you have.

You need to make a list of what you want to see and do as you actually don't have enough of your days planned except for the Vatican day and the Saturday. There is lots of walking and see the small streets and sitting at a outside cafe and some other museums, one near the Termini. And several major churches and the Castle Saint Angelo which is near the Vatican and has some great views of Rome. Have a wonderful time!

you definitely have the right idea for the days you have already planned. Good job with those. maybe others could advise you on what to do for Saturday. I think you could fill it with more sites in Rome, maybe the Capitoline Museum, but if you want to take a day trip Orvieto or Civita might be a good choice.

Hi Diana, we stayed at a hotel between the Pantheon & Trevi fountain that really helped maximize our time with the ability to walk 3 minutes over to some favorite places each evening - not sure where you're staying.

You have listed the major locations. We also enjoyed a half-day at Ostia Antica. It's on the metro line, so very cheap & easy connections for transportation.

Day trip from Rome -- Tuscany is too far, go to Ostia Antica

Excellent start on planning. You do not have your days so packed that you cannot stop and enjoy something that piques your interest along the way. Your Day 4 highlight will be the Galleria Borghese. A walk through the park is nice, or you can even rent a pedal cart for a tour of the large estate. Piazza Navona and the Spanish Steps are "walk-bys" and don't take much time, per se, nor does the Trevi. RIck Steves has the right idea to string some of these sites together with his Night Walk across Rome. You might want to flip flop Weds and Thurs due to the aforementioned papal audience.

Before you tack on a day trip Saturday, be sure you have seen all you want to in Rome. Remain flexible and have some ideas in the back of your mind. I always plan more than we can possibly do, with weather-dependent options. If it's raining when you plan to go to Tivoli, for example, don't bother. Reschedule and have a back-up plan.

Agree with Donna. Tuscany is too far, go to Ostia Antica. You can get there quickly and cheaply on public transit and it is total different from Rome itself. TC
